The Traffic Light Carol

Becky Prophet wrote a carol for paradegoers to sing on Saturday's event at 6 p.m.

O traffic light, O traffic light,

How brilliant are your colors!

O traffic light, O traffic light,

How brilliant are your colors!

There’s verdant green, vermillion red

With yellow set right in between,

O Traffic Light, O traffic light

How brilliant are your colors.

O traffic light, O traffic light

You’re Alfred’s one and only.

O traffic light, O traffic light

We want to make you Alfred’s own,

With village green and A State blue

 and purple for Alfred U.

O Traffic Light, O traffic light

Communal Alfred’s colors.

O traffic light, O traffic light,

How brilliant are your colors!

O traffic light, O traffic light,

How brilliant are your colors!

There’s verdant green, vermillion red

With yellow set right in between,

O Traffic Light, O traffic light

How brilliant are your colors.

Traffic Light Events on Saturday

The festival starts with a short parade.  All are welcome to join the parade, which forms at 5:30 behind Jordan Hall, previously known as Carnegie.  The parade steps off at 6:00 p.m.

Near the traffic light there will be short speeches from each of the past mayors, including current mayor Jim Ninos.  There will also be speeches from Dr. Mark Zupan, President of Alfred University and Dr. Steven Mauro, President of Alfred State College.

There will be a Traffic Light Chant:  “Red, Yellow, Green!  The best that we’ve seen!”   And a whole festival sing of a Traffic Light Carol.  It is sung to the tune of “O Tannenbaum” or “O Christmas Tree”   (See the lyrics at the end of this article and bring them with you to the party!!!  Cell phone pictures are encouraged.

The Dog Doctors will be there with their food truck.  Duke’s Pizza on Main St. will be open at least until 8:00 p.m., and N’Dulgence bakery will be open to 6:00 p.m..

Some emergency vehicles will be on-site for “tours,” explanations, and exploration.

The Terra Cotta Office building on the south end of the intersection will be open with historical displays from 4:00 to 6:00.  It will also be open from 6:00 to 7:30 with Box of Books books, especially for kids of all ages.

There will be crossings of the bridge on E. Pine St.  We want to have as many as possible be the first to cross the bridge in any way they wish. Walking, driving, bicycling, and running have been done many times, but perhaps you will walk or run  in a unique way.  Remember, motorized vehicles are prohibited from this event.

“Sweet Degenerates Band,” through the courtesy of Alfred State College, will provide 70’s to contemporary music for a street dance.  A singing group will charm us with ‘70’s songs.

Traffic Light T-shirts and Traffic JAM are available. Proceeds go to the renovation of Alfred’s two parks for children.  T-shirts at $10 and Traffic Jam at $5 are also available in pre-sales at Alfred’s Community Bank, 39 N. Main St.
