Join us for a Faculty Showcase and Roundtable Conversation on Mentor AI and Visible AI
Deepa DeshpandeMar. 3, 2026
Join us this Tuesday, March 3rd, at 11am, for the first roundtable conversation focused on sharing, exploring, and considering the impacts of diverse use cases of assignments created using Mentor AI and Visible AI. While both platforms provide guided access to tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude to support student AI Literacy and Academic Integrity, they function somewhat differently:
- Visible AI (VAI) is intentionally designed with academic integrity at its core.
- Mentor AI offers a broader student-facing ecosystem and learning support environment.
Together, they raise important questions weโll explore:
- How can both platforms support academic integrity while enabling responsible student use of AI?
- How do we design assignments that build AI literacy, not dependency?
- What does effective, transparent AI integration look like in practice?
Roundtable 1
- Tuesday, March 3
- 11:00 AM โ 12:00 PM
- EJB 106 + Microsoft Teams
Key takeaways: Participants will
- Learn from peers across disciplines
- Ask questions and exchange ideas
- Explore novel prompt designs and creative use cases
- Compare features and approaches across platforms and LLMs

UUP Mourns the Loss of Linda Panter
William SchultzeFeb. 27, 2026
High (but realistic) expectations, committed to equity, fostering collective success. These are three phrases that describe Linda Panter, and they apply equally to her work for Alfred State and United University Professions. Never one to sugar-coat a situation, her engagement with colleagues left them not with a tummy of warm fuzzies, but with mutual agreement that issues raised would be addressed. Period. And she would tell you where to start and help as needed to get it done.
She was the epitome of an "essential employee" and an essential union officer.
On behalf of our local chapter and all of our statewide officers, UUP Alfred expresses its condolences to Linda's loved ones, her fellow nursing associates, and our entire campus community.

Debra TommFeb. 23, 2026
Our campus community provides faculty and staff the services of a campus ombuds to employees who may be having trouble in workplace relations and are seeking an independent, neutral, confidential, and informal avenue to address their issue or concern. If you have questions or would like to meet with the campus ombuds, David Ray, you can connect by selecting the campus ombuds tab in the Alfred State portal, or by calling 607-587-4287.
A campus ombuds provides independent, informal and non-partisan counsel to faculty and staff within the Alfred State campus community. Alfred State faculty and staff can seek the campus ombudโs assistance in dispute resolution or misunderstandings. The campus ombuds provides an opportunity for visitors to discuss matters of concern and may act as a listener, mediator, and factfinder. The campus ombuds answers questions and provides feedback regarding concerns or complaints. The ombuds may also provide referrals to campus resources. Faculty and staff are not required to meet with the campus ombuds to access those resources. When appropriate, the campus ombuds can also speak generally with campus offices about concerns or assist with changes implemented to create a more supportive environment for faculty and staff.

UUP Alfred Communications to Represented Employees
William SchultzeFeb. 11, 2026
Who wants more email??? We know you probably don't! But direct emails are an effective way to reach our members with timely and targeted UUP information, and are more likely to be seen and read. We invite you to be on the lookout for upcoming emails on contract updates, various Joint Labor Management Committee programs, educational workshops, and an all-important member-wide chapter budget vote! These are in addition to the numerous emails sent directly from our statewide office, so forgive us for redundancies.
- To follow UUP's communication preferences, the emails will come from SUNY ALFRED UUP.
- And because they're from an outside server, they will be marked as [EXTERNAL].
- They are sent by our chapter assistant, Elaine (Burns) Ryan.
- Add the address to your safe list if necessary.
As membership in UUP gets you enhanced representation and access to information (some is restricted to MEMBERS ONLY), many emails will go only to members. UUP MEMBERS make good things happen! A higher proportion of membership adds to our negotiating leverage for improving our work lives and benefitting SUNY as a whole. Membership is NOT automatic; check your pay stub and if youโre not already a member, you can sign up at http://uupinfo.org/join

As time allows, other questions or topics will be welcome.
We are working on a plan to present at Wellsville and Northland around that time, possibly remotely. More information will follow for our School of Applied Technology members! We encourage all UUP members to attend!
Please RSVP to Elaine Burns-Ryan (Alfred UUP Chapter Assistant) at alfred@uupmail.org
This is a MEMBER EVENT, so we will check your membership and enable you to join if you're not already. UUP membership makes good things happen! A higher proportion of membership adds to our negotiating leverage for improving our work lives and benefitting SUNY as a whole.
