Career Check Up Mondays in February

Students may stop into the Career Development Center(SLC 404) for Career Checkup Mondays in February!  Drop-in anytime each Monday between 3:30pm-5pm to talk with Maureen or Valerie about each weekly topic.  Each time you attend you will be entered into a drawing for a prize to be given at the end of the 4 week series!

  Topic areas are:

February 6- JobLink ( What is it and how do I use it to search for jobs and events/fairs?)

February 13-Career Fair Etiquette(How do I navigate a career fair? Network? Prepare?)

February 20-Elevator Pitch/Professional Dress(How do I network with an employer and what do I wear?)

February 27-Resume Critiques, Resume Paper(Get a last-minute critique of your resume for the career fair along with resume paper to print it on.)

Community Standards Notice (Spring ’23)

The following information communicates College policies that all students are responsible for understanding and adhering to as members of the Alfred State community. It is important to familiarize yourself with these notices and policies as they represent a broad range of College expectations governing student conduct.

Student Code of Conduct

Alfred State is committed to a set of principles that directs our individual behavior in a community of learning. These principles (found in the Student Code of Conduct link below) provide a guide for how each student can have a positive college experience while respecting the rights of others. In most instances, students can successfully navigate through their experiences without violating these principles. However, when violations are alleged to have occurred, the College has established disciplinary procedures outlined in our Community Standards: Student Code of Conduct. It is important that all members of our campus community understand that acts of violence, such as verbal harassment, physical harassment, bias-related harassment, sexual harassment, and any form of assault on another person, are likely to result in disciplinary dismissal (i.e., suspension or expulsion). Students must utilize appropriate strategies to address conflict and those strategies must be non-threatening. Students struggling with conflict issues are advised to seek assistance from staff on how to resolve their concerns. Students can obtain assistance from their Residence Hall Director, Health & Wellness Services, and their academic advisor in addition to the Student Conduct Office.

Alcohol and Drug Issues

The College's Drug and Alcohol Policy defines the appropriate use of alcohol on campus, the legal and campus consequences for the misuse or illegal use of alcohol and drugs, and the inherent health risks associated with substance abuse. You can read more about this policy in the College’s Community Standards: Student Code of Conduct. In addition, a copy of the College’s policy on alcohol and substance abuse is issued annually to each student, faculty, and staff member.

Please contact your Residence Hall Director or Casey Gross (see above) if you have questions about the College’s alcohol and drug policy. Health & Wellness Services staff are also available to assist students with drug and alcohol questions and concerns.

In April of 2021, New York State legalized the use and possession of cannabis for adults 21 an older with some restrictions (see NYS Penal Law article 222). Despite this change in state law, marihuana remains an illegal substance under federal law. The Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act requires institutions of higher education receiving federal funds (e.g., financial aid) to implement a program to, “prevent the unlawful possession, use, or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol by students and employees.” In accordance with the act, Alfred State prohibits the use and possession of drugs, including cannabis, and addresses alleged student violations through the College’s disciplinary system.

Greek Life

Alfred State has a long and proud tradition with Greek Life. Greek organizations promote scholarship, leadership, community service, and life-long friendship.  First-semester students may not rush and/or pledge any fraternity or sorority. To be eligible to pledge, students must have a prior semester and cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. Sexual Misconduct Information & Sexual Assault Assistance

Alfred State’s Title IX web page provides important educational and assistance information for incidents of sexual misconduct. This web page provides specific responses to questions regarding medical information, criminal and civil suit information, processes regarding residential living and classroom issues, counseling options, and the College’s Grievance Policy for Addressing Complaints of Sexual Harassment. If you or someone you know is the victim of sexual assault, assistance can be obtained by contacting the following:

In addition, the College has partnered with Connecting Communities in Action, Inc., a private, not-for-profit organization, that provides trained advocates to work directly with a student who is a victim of a sexual assault. The link below provides a list of the services their agency provides. An advocate can be requested 24 hours a day by contacting University Police at (607) 587-3999. While University Police activates this service, it is not necessary for a student to speak to an officer if they do not want to.

The College has established clearly defined disciplinary procedures for addressing alleged incidents of sexual misconduct where the individual charged is a student. The regulations contained herein also define what the College considers nonconsensual sexual intercourse, nonconsensual sexual misconduct, and sexual exploitation of others. These procedures and regulations are included in the College’s Student Code of Conduct.

Campus Connect (Students Helping Students)

The Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards is excited to introduce Campus Connect, an initiative of the Best Foot Forward program. The goal of Campus Connect is to provide a quick and easy referral system for students to obtain assistance for fellow Pioneers who may be struggling for any reason.

In short, if you have a concern for another student (or yourself!), please accept the challenge and make a referral using the following web form: The information you share will be kept as private as possible and used to connect students to the appropriate campus personnel and resources. That’s it!

There are no restrictions to the type of concerns you can share. However, any information relating to an emergency, crime, or imminent threat should first be reported to University Police. Please contact the Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards with any questions you may have.

Open Room Changes, Room Buyouts, and Consolidations

The Office of College Housing would like to announce that Open Room Changes and Room Buyouts have begun. This gives students the ability to move to any open bed on campus. If space is available, students may also have the opportunity to buyout a double room as a single. To start this process, students must meet with their Residence Director (RD) during their posted office hours to discuss their options. Please note, students are not permitted to move or swap rooms during Open Room Changes and Room Buyouts without getting approval from their RD. 

Pending on the move, there may be an increase or decrease in the cost of housing. Students are encourages to review the Room Rates prior to completing any move. Information on room rates can be found on our Housing Costs page.

During open room changes and buyouts, students will be given an Acknowledgement of Room Assignment Change form that outlines the process that must be followed. This form must be completed within 48 hours (2 business days) of starting the form. 

All moves must be completed by 8:00 pm on Wednesday, February 8. 

During Open Room Changes and Room Buyouts, RDs will also be consolidating room and/or suites depending on the vacancies that are present. Students may be required to move from their room or accept a new roommate depending on the RDs plan for the building. More information on room consolidations can be found on our Room Selection page.

Oasis - Spring 2023 Hours

Come in and enjoy a peaceful moment at the oasis, pick from several different essential oils, relax in the massage chairs, and grab a cup of tea on your way out. SLC RM 415

The Oasis will be opening for the Spring 2023 semester on Tuesday, January 24th, and will be following the below schedule throughout the semester.

  • Monday, Tuesday, and Friday 4-6pm

Use of the Oasis space is by appointment (24 hours in advance) and will also be open for walk-in’s/first come, first served basis.

  • Oasis slots are 40 minutes long – 20 minutes for massage and 20 minutes for cleaning/disinfecting.
  • No food, drinks, or vaping allowed.
  • Phones are to be silenced, no loud music, or phone calls.
  • Students who are not observing the Student Code of Conduct, are disruptive to others, or are not complaint with social distancing regulations, will be asked to leave the space.

Zumba returns for the spring semester

Zumba classes will be continuing in the spring semester. Join us every Wednesday at 6pm from February 1 through April 19 in the Pioneer Dance Studio (next door to the Fitness Center).
