Community Needs Hub - Spring Open Hours

Our Civic Leadership team has the Community Needs Hub up and running for the spring semester! The thrift store and pantry are well-stocked and waiting for you to visit! For those that have yet check out our space, we are located on the ground floor of Peet Hall and accessible through the two external doors that face the outer campus loop.

Spring Hours of Operation

  • Tuesday: 10:30-4:30
  • Wednesday: 10:30-3:30
  • Thursday: 10:30-3:30
  • Friday: 10:30 – 4:30
  • Saturday: 9:30-10:30
  • Sunday: 12:30-2:30

*Please note that we are cash only! In addition, while we aim to have abide by the above hours, there are occasionally changes in staff availability, so we have a large blue feather flag that says OPEN to help signify when we are open for business.

If you are interested or in need of our Pantry services, please note that our Food Pantry Requests can be completed at anytime. If submitted when you are in the Community Needs Hub, our team will fill your bag on the spot and you can walk out with your goods.  If completed outside of operational hours, our team will fill the request once received and email you about coordinating a pick up time.

In addition to the above, we want to express our gratitude to all the donors!  For those interested in donating clothing, hygiene items, or non-perishable food, we can receive donations during opening hours or in our donation bin located in the SLC on the 3rd floor (near the central entrance). Our space is small, and we do not have the ability to wash any items, so please make sure any donated clothing is clean and in good condition (no undergarments please!).

Celebrate Valentines Day by Digitally Preserving Black History During our Douglass Day Transcribe-a-thon

February 14th is a day of love & action for Black history!

Help us celebrate the life and legacy of Fredrick Douglass on his chosen birthday! The English and Humanity’s department and the Center for Civic Leadership are partnering once again to bring the Douglass Day transcribe-a-thon to Alfred State and our wider community. This civic event is made even sweeter by delicious Douglass Day themed birthday cakes donated by our Culinary Baking students as part of the Douglass Day Bake Off competition.

This year’s Douglass Day will feature the general correspondence of Fredrick Douglass from the Library of Congress, spanning dates from 1841-1912, including everything from public letters to more personal family items. We will live stream the event and have instructions to help guests join in the live transcribing efforts

  • When: February 14th
  • Where: Hinkle Library Classroom
  • Time: 12PM – 3PM

Notable Items:

  • Computers: The event is hosted in a computer lab, but you can also bring your own laptop to join transcribing efforts
  • Transcription Time: Whether you have 30 minutes or 3 hours, your efforts and involvement are welcomed and valued (you can even keep transcribing after the live stream ends!)
  • Voter Awareness Resources: We will once again be joined by The League of Women Voters to provide participants with voter registration and awareness resources.

No efforts are wasted efforts! We welcome all levels of engagement and hope to have your support with digitally archiving Black history for future generations!

Douglass Day 2024 is presented by the Center for Black Digital Research at the Pennsylvania State University and will be co-presented with the Library of Congress and the By The People crowdsourcing platform

The Center for Civic Leadership would like to thank the English and Humanities Department, Culinary Department, and Hinkle Library for your collaborative support in bringing this opportunity to our community!  Should you have any questions or should faculty wish to send students for extra credit, please reach out to Cyan Corwine (corwincy@alfredstate.edu) and Travis Mattison (MattesTW@alfredstate.edu)

  • There is an issue with the TAP application link at the end of the FAFSA.  Most students can apply for TAP directly on the HESC website after they complete the FAFSA. Those who receive an error message can apply in early February.
