Facilitated Community Conversation about Black Love

On Monday Feb. 12 from 5:00 to 6:00 pm the Cultural Life Center, Cultural Life Assembly, and Brother to Brother will sponsor a community conversation entitled "Black Love: How we love ourselves and one another". The event will be held in the Small Events Space on the 3rd floor of the Student Leadership Center.

Dr. Brian Saltsman will facilitate the discussion and include members of the Alfred State campus community.

The discussion will focus on topics such as how those present have seen depictions of Black love (inclusive of the LGBTQIA+ experience), how we have experienced Black love in our lives, the concept, practice, and expression of healthy Black love, and how/why Black love is unique. We are striving to have a discussion among those present and to be able to share openly the insight and experiences which are hallmarks of the experience known as Black Love. We hope that many members of our campus community will be able and willing to join us for this deeply enriching and promising event.

A focus on home craft materials and methods reflects the impact of skills learned in childhood from Kramer's mother. "Dazzle" uses the idea of camouflage as a starting point to ask questions about identity, presentation, honesty, and deception.

Community Needs Hub - Spring Open Hours

Our Civic Leadership team has the Community Needs Hub up and running for the spring semester! The thrift store and pantry are well-stocked and waiting for you to visit! For those that have yet check out our space, we are located on the ground floor of Peet Hall and accessible through the two external doors that face the outer campus loop.

Spring Hours of Operation

  • Tuesday: 10:30-4:30
  • Wednesday: 10:30-3:30
  • Thursday: 10:30-3:30
  • Friday: 10:30 – 4:30
  • Saturday: 9:30-10:30
  • Sunday: 12:30-2:30

*Please note that we are cash only! In addition, while we aim to have abide by the above hours, there are occasionally changes in staff availability, so we have a large blue feather flag that says OPEN to help signify when we are open for business.

If you are interested or in need of our Pantry services, please note that our Food Pantry Requests can be completed at anytime. If submitted when you are in the Community Needs Hub, our team will fill your bag on the spot and you can walk out with your goods.  If completed outside of operational hours, our team will fill the request once received and email you about coordinating a pick up time.

In addition to the above, we want to express our gratitude to all the donors!  For those interested in donating clothing, hygiene items, or non-perishable food, we can receive donations during opening hours or in our donation bin located in the SLC on the 3rd floor (near the central entrance). Our space is small, and we do not have the ability to wash any items, so please make sure any donated clothing is clean and in good condition (no undergarments please!).
