Skills USA Region I Leadership Conference and Skills Olympics information - March 7th

One of the year’s largest recruiting events come to town less than a week from today!  Hundreds of competitive high school students from across WNY will compete in over forty competitions on the Wellsville and Alfred campuses.  The annual event does result in some inconveniences for faculty and students, but decades of experience indicate it’s all worth it!  Thank you in advance to all of you that help to make the Skills USA Regional Conference a success.

WHAT?        33rd Annual Skills USA Region I Leadership Conference and Skills Olympics

WHEN?        Tuesday, March 7, 2023

                       

SCHEDULE

8 a.m.                           Buses begin to arrive at Orvis or Wellsville PSU, depending on origin.

9 a.m.                           Contests scheduled to start.  

12 noon - 1 p.m.           Lunch – Alfred box lunches to be delivered to the Orvis gym or

                                     individual sites/buildings

                                     Wellsville – Wellsville box lunches to be delivered to the Pioneer Student Union

 1 - 2 p.m.                     Continuation of competitions in some areas

2 p.m.                          Contests completed.

2 - 2:30 p.m.                Last contests to be tallied and results delivered to Orvis or faxed to 4331 in Orvis.

2:15 p.m.                     Buses leave Wellsville for Alfred

 

3 - 4 p.m.                     All Skills USA personnel in the Orvis gym for Awards Ceremony

Questions from Skills USA visitors may be referred to the Orvis lobby (phone #: TBA) or the Wellsville Zero Energy Home (Pam Brandes at 3101). 
Both locations will be staffed by Skills USA personnel throughout the day. If you have any questions/concerns about a contest in your area, please contact Mike Ronan.

Come listen to Alumni Austin Clay talk about the careers and opportunities available in Esports! This event is being held on Wednesday, March 8th @ 4:00pm in the SLC Small Events Space!


PSU Winter Olympics

The PSU Winter Olympics is starting March 20-31 in the PSU (Pioneer Student Union) on the Wellsville campus during school hours. Events will include billiards speed play, foul shot contest, cornhole speed toss, billiards power shot, and mini golf tournament. There will be $500 in prizes, come and join the fun for this two week event!   

 


Save The Date - Honors Convocation!

Wellsville Students -Limited Parking on Wellsville campus March 7th

Attention Wellsville Students. There will be limited parking on the Wellsville campus on Tuesday, March 7th due to the High School SkillsUSA competitions.  We ask that you carpool or take the campus bus shuttle to and from campus that day.  There will be absolutely no parking allowed on the main road running in front of the campus or Current Controls business next door.

Parking Info. for Skills USA 3/7 - University Police

On Tuesday, March 7, 2023, Alfred State will be hosting the 33rd Annual Skills USA Region I Leadership Conference and Skills Olympics. Alfred State will welcome over 850 visitors. Alfred State faculty, staff, and students should be aware of the following and how it may impact you individually. · Part of Lot 20 and 20A will be closed at 7 a.m. so that school buses can be parked there for the duration of the competition. · Busses will be entering campus and unloading passengers in front of the Orvis Activities Center beginning around 7:20 a.m. You will notice an increased amount of traffic in the morning so if possible avoid this area. · Busses will be parked in lot 20 and 20A for the entire day. · We will begin moving buses to the staging area around 2:15 p.m. This area includes lot #18, #19, and #20. These lots are also known as “Siberia” parking lots up by the track. · If you are parked in any of these lots, you will not be able to exit until all the buses have loaded and departed. · There will be an increased amount of traffic on Upper College Drive between 4 and 4:30 p.m. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation.

Stay for 4

If you are planning to graduate this May from either an associate (or certificate) program and wish to continue your education at Alfred State College in a corresponding baccalaureate (or associate) degree program, please complete a SUNY Joint Admissions/Intent to Enroll Form.  This would also include any graduates who wish to pursue the Technology Management or Interdisciplinary Studies baccalaureate degree!

 

These forms should be completed and returned to the Admissions Office as soon as possible, but no later than March 24.  Students must submit their completed SUNY Joint Admissions/Intent to Enroll Forms to the Admissions Office by March 24 in order to complete the admission process in time to be able to register for classes for the fall semester during the April course registration time period.  As a reminder, there is no application fee since students completing this form will be either associate degree (or certificate) recipients continuing in the corresponding program.

 

The updated SUNY Joint Admissions/Intent to Enroll form is available at https://www.alfredstate.edu/stay-for-four. Please bring the completed form to the Admissions Office so that we can review it and answer any questions regarding the appropriate codes; it only takes a few minutes.

Criminal Justice Club meeting scheduled for Thursday, March 9, at 3 p.m. in the Student Leadership Center, Rm. 408.  We have arranged for a speaker for this meeting.  It will be Allegany County Sheriff Scott Cicirello.  He has been a Wellsville Police Officer, Chief of Police, State Trooper, a Senior Investigator in the State Police, SWAT member, and a FBI National Academy graduate.

What's the 411 on Counseling

Are interested in getting counseling, but unsure of how to begin?

Graduate intern counseling staff members will be available in the Oasis at the SLC to answer any questions regarding counseling services at Alfred State including but not limited to:

 

●            Process of scheduling an intake

●            What the counseling process entails and how often sessions are

●            Psychiatry referrals/ medication monitoring

●            In-person vs. virtual appointments

●            Support resources available outside of office hours

 

No appointments necessary (walk-in basis)

No obligation to enroll in ongoing counseling with counseling services

NOTE: this service is not confidential and is not individual therapy or crisis intervention services

Beginning Thursday 3/2 and Thursday 3/9 from 4:45-7PM


Spring Break Housing

The Office of College Housing is announcing that the residence halls will close for spring break at 10:00 pm on Friday, March 10 and will reopen at 12:00 pm on Sunday, March 19. Only students who have been approved to stay for the break will be allowed in the residence halls during the break. With that, the spring break housing application is now open. If you wish to apply to stay for the break, please complete the Break Housing Request. Please note that applying does not guarantee that you will be approved for break housing. If approved for break housing, you may need to temporarily relocate to another residence hall.

Students will only be approved who:

  • Live over 500 miles away (according to your home Banner Address).
  • Have a Special Circumstance (ex. Do not have a place to go)
  • Working for the college (with Supervisors Approval)
  • Part an official athletic team and listed on the Roster received from Athletics

To apply for break housing, please go to alfredstate.erezlife.com and select “Break Housing Request” under the Forms section. The application closes at 3 pm on March 9, 2023.

Group Housing Sign Ups

The Office of College Housing would like to announce that the group sign ups for group housing is now live! Our group process allows a group to sign up for a MacKenzie Rowhouse, MacKenzie Commons Apartment, Townhouse, MacKenzie Suite, or Main Gate Suite for the 2023-2024 academic year before individual room sign-ups begin. Please note, some areas that are available in the group housing process may not be available during individual sign ups (specifically Townhouses and MacKenzie Commons Apartments).

To sign up as a group, one group representative is responsible for completing the "Group Housing Sign-Up" form located in the form section of eRezLife

Groups cannot exceed more than 12 people. Areas with doubles or singles will be filled according to a group size. Groups will not be split between areas (i.e. one group cannot take two rowhouses). 

Groups can be COED (meaning a mixture of male/female/non-binary persons). Currently, double rooms will remain one gender but the suite may COED.

Groups are scored and placed based on a matrix of the following information:
    - Years in residence
    - GPA
    - Accrued credit hours
    - Judicial history (negative score)

More information pertaining to group sign-ups is noted on the Group Housing Sign-Up form. 

Group sign-ups end Friday, March 10 and placements will be offered by Monday, March20.

New Oasis Hours for the Spring!

Come in and enjoy a peaceful moment at the oasis, pick from several different essential oils, relax in the massage chairs, and grab a cup of tea on your way out. SLC RM 415

The Oasis will be open for the Spring 2023 semester, and will be following the below schedule throughout the semester.

  • Monday (2-8pm), Tuesday (2-8pm), Wednesday (4-7pm), Thursday (2-6pm), Friday (2-4pm)

Use of the Oasis space can be booked by appointment (24 hours in advance) for certain days and hours. It will also be open for walk-in’s/first come, first served basis.

 

To Schedule an Appointment to use a Massage Chair in the Oasis:

Please keep in mind:

  • Oasis slots are 20 minutes long.
  • No food, drinks, or vaping allowed.
  • Phones are to be silenced, no loud music, or phone calls.
  • Students who are not observing the Student Code of Conduct, are disruptive to others, or are not complaint with social distancing regulations, will be asked to leave the space.

An Ergo publication is distributed each semester.  Students, faculty, and staff are invited to submit their original works of art, poetry, and prose by sending them to ERGO@alfredstate.edu.  Dr. Aniko Constantine (SDC Bldg., Rm. 309), is the Faculty Advisor for ERGO.  If you wish, your submission could be published anonymously or under a pseudonym.

Take a moment and review one of our previous publications located in several of the buildings around campus, and then take a moment to create a submission for the Spring 2023 publication.
