Help Digitally Preserve Black History During our Douglass Day Transcribe-a-thon

We invite you to join us in this civically engaged and collaborative event! Help us celebrate Fredrick Douglass while taking part in the international Douglass Day efforts to digitally preserve black history. This year’s transcribing efforts will focus on Mary Ann Shadd Cary (1823-1893), who was an African American activist, teacher, writer, and lawyer. Shadd Cary was one of the earliest Black women to edit a newspaper, serve as a Civil War recruiter, and attend law school.

We will live stream the international event and have instructions to help guests join in the live transcribing efforts. We will also be joined by a guest from the League of Women Voters and have further resources regarding voter registration available in the Hinkle Library Gallery along with Douglass Day themed birthday cakes created and donated by our very own culinary students as part of the Douglass Day Bake Off competition

  • When: February 14th
  • Where: Hinkle Library Classroom
  • Time: 12PM – 3PM

Location is equipped with computers or you cab bring your laptop  to join transcribing efforts. Whether you can come for the full three hours or just come for a half hour, we welcome all levels of engagement and hope to have your support with preserving black history for future generations! Douglass Day 2023 is presented internationally by the Center for Black Digital Research at the Pennsylvania State University and Zooniverse.

The Center for Civic Leadership would like to thank the English and Humanities Department, Culinary Department, and Hinkle Library for your collaborative support in bringing this opportunity to our community!  Should you have any questions or should faculty wish to send students for extra credit, please reach out to Cyan Corwine (corwincy@alfredstate.edu) and Travis Mattison (MattesTW@alfredstate.edu)

Campus Connect (Students Helping Students)

The Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards is excited to introduce Campus Connect, an initiative of the Best Foot Forward program. The goal of Campus Connect is to provide a quick and easy referral system for students to obtain assistance for fellow Pioneers who may be struggling for any reason.

In short, if you have a concern for another student (or yourself!), please accept the challenge and make a referral using the following web form: https://bit.ly/ascconnect. The information you share will be kept as private as possible and used to connect students to the appropriate campus personnel and resources. That’s it!

There are no restrictions to the type of concerns you can share. However, any information relating to an emergency, crime, or imminent threat should first be reported to University Police. Please contact the Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards with any questions you may have.

Be empowered. Be a Pioneer. Help each other!

Complete the NASCE Survey and be Entered in a Gift Card Drawing!

Help us capture the student story of service and community engagement at Alfred State! All students taking in person classes at the Wellsville or Alfred Campus will receive an email with a link to complete the NASCE survey, which will be sent to you from nasce@siena.edu.  Alfred State College students who complete the survey will be entered to win one of 10 campus store gift cards valued at $20 each

This survey is an investigation of service and community engagement performed by students at Alfred State College. The story of service and community engagement can be captured through so many activities, both big and small. From participating in a program that broadened awareness, donating blood, can recycling, registering to vote at tabling event, supporting campus and town clean-up events, engaging with food drive or food bank services, supported community need through a class, or joining disaster relief and habitat for humanity efforts, there are countless ways your story of community and service can be captured.  The survey should take about 10-15 minutes to complete, and we ask that all students make sure they are completing it before February 17th.

Should you have any questions you can reach out to Cyan Corwine (corwincy@alfredstate.edu) in the Center for Civic Leadership!

Open Room Changes, Room Buyouts, and Consolidations

The Office of College Housing would like to announce that Open Room Changes and Room Buyouts have begun. This gives students the ability to move to any open bed on campus. If space is available, students may also have the opportunity to buyout a double room as a single. To start this process, students must meet with their Residence Director (RD) during their posted office hours to discuss their options. Please note, students are not permitted to move or swap rooms during Open Room Changes and Room Buyouts without getting approval from their RD.

Pending on the move, there may be an increase or decrease in the cost of housing. Students are encourages to review the Room Rates prior to completing any move. Information on room rates can be found on our Housing Costs page.

During open room changes and buyouts, students will be given an Acknowledgement of Room Assignment Change form that outlines the process that must be followed. This form must be completed within 48 hours (2 business days) of starting the form.

All moves must be completed by 8:00 pm on Wednesday, February 8.

During Open Room Changes and Room Buyouts, RDs will also be consolidating room and/or suites depending on the vacancies that are present. Students may be required to move from their room or accept a new roommate depending on the RDs plan for the building. More information on room consolidations can be found on our Room Selection page.

Please contact Residential Service at 607-587-4371 or reslife@alfredstate.edu if you have any questions.
