September 11: Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance
September 11: Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance
Today, we pause to honor and remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost during the tragic events of September 11, 2001. We reflect on the devastating attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and aboard United Airlines Flight 93, and we hold in our hearts the families and communities forever changed by that day.
We also pay tribute to the extraordinary bravery of the first responders. Firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and countless others who ran toward danger with unwavering courage and compassion. Their selfless actions continue to inspire us and remind us of the power of resilience, unity, and service to others.
Flags on campus today will be lowered to half-staff and the Hinkle Belltower will toll 24 times at 8:46 a.m. We encourage all faculty, staff, and students to pause and participate in the national moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., the time that the first tower was struck.
On the Wellsville campus, students will gather near the main entrance (next to the old administration building) at 8:30 a.m. for a time of reflection and remembrance. The Emerald Hook & Ladder Company will display an American flag from their ladder truck.
The Cultural Life Center and ASC Veterans United will be hosting a remembrance ceremony from Noon β 2 p.m. in the SLC Green Space. Any member of the ASC community is invited to write stories to remember a family member, friend, or loved on who was affected for the events of 9/11. Flags will also be available to honor them as well.
At Alfred State, cultivating a caring community extend beyond the boundaries of our school and are more than words written in our strategic plan. It is the way we show each other and the world around us compassion and support. I hope you will find time to attend one of these events or in your own private way reflection and remembrance.
Sincerely,
Steven Mauro, PhD
President
