What’s Going Around- Health and Wellness Services

What’s going around?

Hello Alfred State Campus!  My name is Jess Lippa and I’m the new Assistant Medical Director in Health and Wellness after Dan Woolston has retired.  I’ve worked with many of you as a Nursing Faculty in the past, so it’s great to be here in a different capacity.

Upper respiratory viruses continue to be the most common medical diagnosis at Health and Wellness Services.  Symptoms may include (but are not limited to) fatigue, malaise, runny/stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, diarrhea/vomiting, and fever that could last 3-7 days.

Recommendations from our medical team include rest, fluids (keeping your urine a light-yellow color), Mucinex (guaifenesin), saline nasal spray, and over-the-counter pain relievers such as Motrin (ibuprofen) and Tylenol (acetaminophen). These infections are usually viral and typically resolve within 7-10 days on their own.  If symptoms persist and/or get worse after 7-10 days, then an evaluation by a medical professional is needed.

Overall, ways to lower your risk of infection include the following:  Get your updated Flu and COVID vaccines, get plenty of sleep, stay physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.  Hand washing and wearing a mask when around larger groups is also encouraged as we head into Flu season.

We are also seeing an uptick in Strep Pharyngitis.  Symptoms include a fever, sore throat, large tonsils with exudate (white spots), and enlarged/tender lymph nodes- typically in the absence of runny/stuffy nose and cough. If you are concerned, a rapid strep test can be completed.

As always for students, don’t hesitate to reach out if you wish to be evaluated by our team through the end of this week.  Alfred Campus- call us at 607-587-4200 to set up a time to visit (appointment only).  Wellsville Campus- call 607-587-3141 or visit the health center in the PSU for a walk-in appointment.

Medical excuses or "notes" excusing students from class will not be provided. However, confirmation dates and times a student received treatment can be accessed through the student health portal, to be provided to their faculty.
