As the Winter Season Sports come to an end in the coming weeks, with playoff competition on the horizon, spring sport seasons begin to open. Men’s and Women’s Basketball has their last two regular season contests with Senior Day on Saturday, February 18. season. The Men’s and Women’s Swim and Dive teams compete this week at the AMCC Championships in Webster, NY. The Pioneer Baseball team head s to Virginia to take on Ferrum in a 3-game set to open their season! Invitation to Join Psi Beta (National Honor Society in Psychology)

DEADLINE:  Friday, February 17, 2023 to request an invitation.

You have the opportunity to become a member of Psi Beta if you meet the criteria below.   Students become members of Psi Beta by registering through the Psi Beta chapter advisor on campus, Dr. Amanda Silva, Professor in Social & Behavioral Sciences.  If interested, please send an e-mail requesting an invitation into Psi Beta to Dr. Amanda Silva at SilvaAM@alfredstate.edu.  Dr. Silva will then confirm your eligibility and you will receive an invitation code to allow you to register as a member on the PsiBeta.org website where you will enter registration information and an area to make a payment to pay a onetime, lifetime membership fee.

The membership eligibility requirements are as follows:

1. You have completed a college psychology course with a grade of B or higher.

2. You have completed 12 units of college coursework with a cumulative college GPA of 3.25 or higher.

3. You have an interest in psychology.

4. You have good standing in the community.

5. You pay a $50 one time, lifetime fee.

Benefits of Membership

• Members gain recognition for achieving the honor of membership. Among the entities that recognize Psi Beta membership: Psi Chi, APA, APS, psychology departments at colleges and universities, and employers.
• Verification of membership for references throughout the member’s lifetime.
• Eligibility for national awards (e.g., the student research paper awards provide cash prizes of $500, $300, and $200 to three winning students).
• Eligibility for these different annual awards: Building Bonds, Chapter Excellence, Chapter Community service, Individual Community Service, College Life Award, and Faculty Advisor.
• Publication of membership and activities in the nationally distributed Psi Beta Newsletter.
• Opportunities for ethnic minority students to participate in the annual Diversity Project mentoring program during the annual conference of the American Psychological Association.
• Psi Beta offers the experience of operating a chapter and provides opportunities to acquire leadership skills, interact with faculty outside the classroom, learn more about the professional and educational choices available in psychology, meet outstanding professionals in psychology, participate in community service, meet peers with similar interests, and be involved with Psi Beta on the national level.
• Psi Beta membership contributes to the member’s confidence and feelings of self-worth.
• Psi Beta offers the opportunity to participate in national, regional, and local psychological association programs, including paper and poster presentations at professional conferences.
• Psi Beta student members are eligible for student affiliate membership in the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Association for Psychological Science (APS).
• Psi Beta membership meets one of the requirements for entrance at the GS-7 level (2 levels higher) in numerous occupations in Federal service.

The Student Success Center will be hosting the Tackling Assignments Workshop on Thursday, February 16th at 5pm in the Student Development Center, Room 109. If your approach to assignments/homework is to complete them with the least amount of time & effort, then this workshop is for you!  In this workshop you will learn how to: 1. take notes and make them meaningful, 2. organize, track and complete assignments with greater understanding and 3. utilize valuable feedback.  All are welcome and encouraged to join!

The Oasis will be opening for the Spring 2023 semester on Tuesday, January 24th, and will be following the below schedule throughout the semester.

• Monday (4-8pm), Tuesday (4-8pm), Wednesday (4-7pm), Thursday (4-6pm)

Use of the Oasis space is by appointment (24 hours in advance) and will also be open for walk-in’s/first come, first served basis.

• Oasis slots are 40 minutes long – 20 minutes for massage and 20 minutes for cleaning/disinfecting.

• Students who are not observing the Student Code of Conduct, are disruptive to others, or are not complaint with social distancing regulations, will be asked to leave the space.

Help us capture the student story of service and community engagement at Alfred State! All students taking in person classes at the Wellsville or Alfred Campus will receive an email with a link to complete the NASCE survey, which will be sent to you from nasce@siena.edu.  Alfred State College students who complete the survey will be entered to win one of 10 campus store gift cards valued at $20 each. 

This survey is an investigation of service and community engagement performed by students at Alfred State College. The story of service and community engagement can be captured through so many activities, both big and small. From participating in a program that broadened awareness, donating blood, can recycling, registering to vote at tabling event, supporting campus and town clean-up events, engaging with food drive or food bank services, supported community need through a class, or joining disaster relief and habitat for humanity efforts, there are countless ways your story of community and service can be captured.  The survey should take about 10-15 minutes to complete, and we ask that all students make sure they are completing it before February 17th.

We invite you to join us in this civically engaged and collaborative event! Help us celebrate Fredrick Douglass while taking part in the international Douglass Day efforts to digitally preserve black history. This year’s transcribing efforts will focus on Mary Ann Shadd Cary (1823-1893), who was an African American activist, teacher, writer, and lawyer. Shadd Cary was one of the earliest Black women to edit a newspaper, serve as a Civil War recruiter, and attend law school.

We will live stream the international event and have instructions to help guests join in the live transcribing efforts. We will also be joined by a guest from the League of Women Voters and have further resources regarding voter registration available in the Hinkle Library Gallery along with Douglass Day themed birthday cakes created and donated by our very own culinary students as part of the Douglass Day Bake Off competition.

Location is equipped with computers or you cab bring your laptop  to join transcribing efforts. Whether you can come for the full three hours or just come for a half hour, we welcome all levels of engagement and hope to have your support with preserving black history for future generations! Douglass Day 2023 is presented internationally by the Center for Black Digital Research at the Pennsylvania State University and Zooniverse.
