✅ Your 2-Minute Halloween Checklist
Pioneers,
Nothing about Halloween is scarier than a choice that hurts you or someone else.
Halloween is almost here, and there's a lot to enjoy: College-sponsored events, time with friends, a break from the routine. We want you to have fun. We also want all of us to get to Monday with our safety, reputations, and friendships intact.
Before you head out, take two minutes and run through this list.
☐ Check your costume.
Picture explaining it tomorrow to the person it's about, to your family, or to an employer who finds the photo in five years. If it turns someone's culture, identity, or pain into a punchline, swap it out. If you have to ask whether it's offensive, you already have your answer.
☐ Respect every boundary.
A costume is not consent. What someone wears never gives anyone permission to touch, grab, make sexual comments, or assume interest. Consent must be knowing, voluntary, and mutual. It can be withdrawn at any time, and someone who is incapacitated, including from alcohol or drugs, cannot give it.
☐ Make your plan.
Know who you're going with, how you're getting home, and who's checking in with whom. Charge your phone. Nobody walks home alone, and nobody drives impaired.
And remember who else is out this weekend. The village is home to families, and some of the people on those sidewalks will be kids in their first costumes, holding a parent's hand. Give them a Halloween as safe as the ones you remember.
☐ Know your first move.
Save University Police, 607-587-3999, in your contacts now. If someone is too intoxicated, being pressured, or getting hurt, call 911 or University Police before you reach for your camera. Getting help for yourself or a friend is always the right call.
☐ Pause before you post.
It's all entertainment until the video is of you or someone you care about. Before you film, share, or comment, ask what your contribution adds. Content that mocks, threatens, or glorifies violence doesn't become harmless because someone else posted it first. If you can't name the value, don't hit send. See something concerning? Report it to the College.
Being a Pioneer means the people around you can count on you, especially when it's inconvenient.
Have a great weekend, and look out for each other.
