On Thursday, September 24 at 5 PM, the Hinkle Memorial Library at Alfred State is hosting "Let's Talk: Reading," a panel event featuring our own students and local writers. Panelists will describe why they love to read and how their love of reading has affected their writing. We invite all students, faculty, and staff to attend and share their love of reading; audience members will have opportunities to answer and ask questions, too! The event will take place in the Library Classroom and refreshments will be provided. See you there!

This is a just a reminder that the last day to DROP a full-term course with no fee is 9/21/26.

However, students can still withdraw from a full-term course with a $20 fee through 11/30/26.

The Center for Innovation and Teaching Excellence (CITE) is delighted to announce this year's seven Faculty Fellowship and Faculty Learning Community (FLC)/Community of Practice (CoP) Leadership Award recipients. Across the Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 semesters, these colleagues will study AI in their classrooms, bring faculty and student voices into campus AI conversations, and build communities around global learning, accessibility, and civil dialogue. Please join us in congratulating them!

Faculty Fellows: Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Track
These Fellows will receive guidance and support from CITE, to study AI-enhanced teaching in their own courses and share what they learn with the campus.

• Elizabeth Joyce, Architecture and Design: Blueprints for the Future: Integrating AI into the Architectural Studio. Elizabeth is bringing AI-enhanced projects into ARCH 3104 Design Studio 1. She will study whether AI can strengthen students' AI literacy and project outcomes without compromising academic integrity and will build a database of AI tools for her department.
• Yang Song, Civil Engineering Technology: Building AI-Critical Engineering Judgment: Designing and Studying AI-Enhanced Assignments in CIVL 6143 Transportation & Highway Design. Yang is designing three assignment modules that ask students to check, correct, or reject AI output against professional engineering standards. The study will examine whether this approach sharpens students' design accuracy and engineering judgment.

Faculty Fellows: Institutional Leadership in Collaboration with CITE Track
These Fellows will work with CITE to gather faculty and student perspectives that will shape Alfred State's AI programming and policy.

• Janelle Varin, Library: Assessing Cross-Departmental Needs and Perspectives on AI Literacy. Through surveys and departmental "State of AI" conversations, Janelle will collaborate with CITE to capture how AI is understood, used, and taught across campus. The findings will become a set of recommendations to guide Departmental and Institutional AI programming.
• Angela Graves, Social and Behavioral Sciences: Surfacing Student Voice on AI: Cross-Disciplinary Accounts and Departmental Conversations. Angela will mentor a Student Senate project led by student Adel Hashimov. In collaboration with CITE, the project will gather student perspectives on how AI helps or hinders learning across majors, and those findings will feed into departmental AI conversations. Angela will also mentor SAT Faculty integrate AI responsibly in their courses.

Faculty Learning Community [FLC] Leaders

• Tamanna Kabir, Business: Advancing Collaborative Online International Learning @ ASC. Tamanna will lead a community that supports faculty in designing and running COIL partnerships with international collaborators and will curate shared resources for globally networked teaching.
• Kevin Hofmann, Architecture and Design: Advancing Accessibility and Inclusion in Teaching and Learning @ ASC. Kevin will lead a cross-disciplinary FLC focused on accessible, inclusive course design and help colleagues build practical resources they can use right away.
• Brian Saltsman, Social and Behavioral Sciences: Sustaining Civil Dialogues Across Differences in Our Community. Brian will lead an FLC focused on creating classroom spaces where students can take on difficult topics with openness, respect, and intellectual courage. Sessions will be built around shared readings and real scenarios.

Get Involved
Several of these projects are looking for participants. The COIL, Accessibility and Inclusion, and Civil Dialogue communities are recruiting faculty from all disciplines, and State of AI conversations will be coming to departments this year. Dear Students,

We want to make you aware of a growing online scam involving spoofed tracking numbers and fraudulent online retailers. 

Scammers may provide a tracking number that appears legitimate and shows a package as "delivered," even though the item you purchased was never sent to your address. In some cases, the tracking information is altered or linked to a different delivery location in the same area, making it difficult to dispute the charge.

Be especially cautious when ordering from unfamiliar international websites. We have received reports of scams involving tracking numbers, including some beginning with "CZ," that appear to show delivery activity even when merchandise is never received. A tracking number alone is not proof that an order is legitimate. Always research the seller, use a protected payment method, and purchase from reputable retailers whenever possible.

To help protect yourself:

• Purchase only from reputable and well-known retailers.
• Be cautious of websites offering deep discounts that seem too good to be true.
• Research unfamiliar sellers before making a purchase.
• Use secure payment methods, preferably credit cards, which often provide stronger fraud protection.
• Verify website URLs carefully and watch for misspellings or unusual domain names.
• Keep records of your order confirmations, receipts, and correspondence with sellers.

If you receive a tracking number for a purchase and something seems suspicious, contact the shipping carrier and the seller directly to verify the shipment details. If you believe you have been the victim of a scam, report the issue to your financial institution immediately and monitor your accounts for unauthorized activity.

Staying informed and exercising caution when shopping online can help protect you from fraud and financial loss. 

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Why this matters: Scammers continue to use increasingly sophisticated methods to make fraudulent purchases appear legitimate. Taking a few extra moments to verify a seller can help prevent significant frustration and financial loss.

This year on Saturday, September 26th from 4:30-6:30 pm in the MacKenzie Common Atrium there will be a Campus Feud (Family Feud) for members of the community. We are looking for teams of 4 to compete for some great Alfred State Prizes. But first we need some survey responses. I am asking for assistance from the campus community with the responses for the game. The included link is for the 50 questions available for the event. You can fill in as many or as few responses as you wish but the more we have the better. The form will be available until Thursday, Sept. 24th. Be creative and thank you for your help. There will be additional events also throughout the year.
