Join us for a Faculty Showcase and Roundtable Conversation on Mentor AI and Visible AI
Deepa DeshpandeMar. 3, 2026
Join us this Tuesday, March 3rd, at 11am, for the first roundtable conversation focused on sharing, exploring, and considering the impacts of diverse use cases of assignments created using Mentor AI and Visible AI. While both platforms provide guided access to tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude to support student AI Literacy and Academic Integrity, they function somewhat differently:
- Visible AI (VAI) is intentionally designed with academic integrity at its core.
- Mentor AI offers a broader student-facing ecosystem and learning support environment.
Together, they raise important questions we’ll explore:
- How can both platforms support academic integrity while enabling responsible student use of AI?
- How do we design assignments that build AI literacy, not dependency?
- What does effective, transparent AI integration look like in practice?

🎉 30-Second Scholarship Universe Classroom Pitch for Students 🎉
Mary PerkinsFeb. 11, 2026
PLEASE remind students to log in to Scholarship Universe!
Here is a 30-second quick pitch you can share in your classrooms or even in the hallway:
Alfred State has a new scholarship platform called Scholarship Universe. It’s the one place where students can be matched with both internal and external scholarships.
5 Things to Know:
- When students log in, they’ll land on a dashboard. To unlock scholarships, the most important step is answering the matching questions — they can click the green bar with the dollar signs at the top or the “Questions” tab on the left.
- As students answer questions, the system automatically matches them with scholarships they may qualify for. Matches can be viewed under the “Scholarships” tab on the left toolbar. Scholarships are labeled as Match, Partial Match, or Non-Match.
- Students can see application-based scholarships under the “Applications” tab, including a section for ones that are “Ready to Start.”
- If documents are required, students can upload everything directly under the “My Docs” tab.
- It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s absolutely worth it — scholarships are open NOW, so students should log in and get started.

🎉 Scholarship Universe – A Time-Saving Tool for Faculty & Students
Mary PerkinsJan. 27, 2026
We have officially integrated our private donor scholarships within Scholarship Universe! With this database being a centralized scholarship platform, it is designed to make the scholarship process simpler, faster, and more efficient for everyone.
✨ Why this matters:
Scholarship Universe significantly reduces manual work, streamlines the review process, and helps ensure students are matched with scholarships they actually qualify for, all in one place!
As students return to the classroom, we kindly ask for your help in spreading the word by encouraging them to log in and complete their matching questions.
https://alfredstate.scholarshipuniverse.com
📌 Important to know:
In order for students to be matched with internal and external scholarships for the upcoming academic year, they must answer the matching questions within Scholarship Universe. If those questions aren’t completed, students won’t appear as eligible applicants during the review process.
As shared in our previous announcement, once we have fully learned and tested the system, we will offer training sessions at various times and days to walk faculty and staff through the scholarship review and selection process. Our goal is to ensure everyone feels comfortable and confident using this new tool before diving in.
Your encouragement will help students take full advantage of this system—and will ultimately save everyone time down the road. Thank you for helping us launch this exciting new tool!

Scholarship Changes Coming Soon – Empowering Students with More Opportunities
Mary PerkinsDec. 16, 2025
Dear Faculty and Staff,
We are excited to share that Alfred State has adopted a new scholarship management system: Scholarship Universe by Ellucian. This powerful tool not only helps our institution streamline scholarship processes but also gives students access to a wide range of external scholarship opportunities.
Currently, any accepted or enrolled student can log in at https://alfredstate.scholarshipuniverse.com to explore and apply for external scholarships they may qualify for. Please encourage your students to check it out as they head home for break. If students have any questions, please direct them to use the email: AlfredStateScholarships@alfredstate.edu
As for Alfred State campus scholarships, we are working diligently to integrate them into the system. Once this setup is complete, we will schedule training sessions at various times and days for departments and reviewers to guide you through the new process which will be consistent with the scholarship timeline that we have used at Alfred State.
Thank you for your patience and support as we implement these exciting changes, and please don't hesitate to reach out to Chris Vernam and/or Mary Perkins with any questions.
We hope you have a magical holiday season! 🎄

Academic Affairs - Section Change Information
Alan VlakancicNov. 10, 2025
If a student is changing sections of an identical course past the add/drop date (for example, changing from a M/W/F GLST 2113 to a T/R GLST 2113) this does not need to be an Academic Affairs appeal. If the student gets a signature from the department chair and advisor, this can be processed directly by records, without going through the Academic Affairs appeal process.
- 502.8 A class section change within the first five days requires the approval of the student's department chair or academic adviser [sic]. After five instructional days, a section change will also require the approval of the course department chair. A section change after the second week occurs for unique and/or extenuating circumstances. A class section change can only occur within the same part of term. Changes occurring outside of the same part of term will be handled as add/drop listed in section 502.10 and 502.11.

Thursday November 6
10:00-10:45AM EST
Title: Side Quests in Your Online Course
Presenter: Jennifer Shloming, Fashion Institute of Technology
Description: Side quests are optional activities that let students spark their curiosity in a topic that may not be covered during class, which can earn them a bonus and develop skills.
12:00-12:45PM EST
Title: Accessible Course Content Checklist
Presenter: Allene Slating, Senior Instructional Designer, SUNY Online Teaching
Description: Are you an instructional designer, faculty member, or anyone involved in creating accessible course content? Join us for a webinar on how to use an optional accessibility checklist to help ensure your digital materials are accessible to all learners.
In this session, we will:
- Introduce and review the optional Accessible Course Content Checklist
- Demonstrate how it can be applied to a course or adapted to meet specific campus needs
- Highlight important points and tips for creating accessible digital content
*Note: This session will be the same as November 5th. Duplication is intentional to accommodate the varying teaching schedules of our audience.

Friday November 7
10:00-10:45AM EST
Title: Creating Friction: Using Multi-Media Assignments in Online Courses
Presenter: Rachel Rigolino, SUNY New Paltz
Description: This presentation examines how the instructor transformed a standard assignment — an annotated bibliography — into a multimedia assignment. The original purpose was to circumvent student overreliance on abstracts and surface reading and encourage students to actually read sources and evaluate them. In the age of AI, these multimedia assignments have proven to be even more valuable.
11:00-11:45AM EST
Title: Strategies to Design for Student Engagement and Belonging in Online Courses
Presenter: Stephanie Foote, Stony Brook University
Description: Student engagement and sense of belonging are shaped by initial class experiences or class beginnings (Lange, 2016). While there are strategies faculty can use to maximize the beginning and end of synchronous class meetings, this session will focus on four approaches faculty can take to be intentional about the design of the beginning of their synchronous or asynchronous online course(s) in a broader sense. Specifically, we will explore pedagogical approaches that can be implemented to communicate belonging and engagement before and during the early part of a course. Participants will leave with specific ideas that can be implemented, immediately, in their own online courses.
Outcomes:
- Describe the importance of class beginnings on student engagement and belonging in online courses.
- Analyze four approaches that can be implemented to foster student engagement and belonging.
- Identify at least one approach to implement in your own course(s).
Print Black and White in the Library again!
Janelle VarinNov. 6, 2025
Good news, campus community! The black and white printer in the Library is up and running! You can use it to print from a Library computer or your personal device. (Should you ever need to print in black and white from a color printer again, there is a way to get charged the black and white price, saving you money. Look for the "Color" or "Color Mode" dropdown menu and change the setting to Black and White. You may need to open "Printer Properties" if you do not see this option. A librarian is always available to help with this!)

The Library needs your feedback!
Janelle VarinOct. 17, 2025
The Hinkle Library is evaluating the Swank Digital Campus streaming film platform as a possible new resource to offer our campus community.
We need your feedback! This database is unique in that it has a variety of pricing models depending on how many films we license (we would not have access to the full catalog). Swank films are not licensed for public performances, but can be played in class. And, the beauty of the streaming model is that students can watch them from anywhere once they log in to the database.
Please take a look at the link below and let Janelle Varin or Nick Cousino know if you see films that would support your courses. Thank you!
Swank has access to over 40,000 Titles to select from: https://www.swank.com/digital-campus/movies-tv/
