The senior vet tech students have been hard at work researching animal diseases that don't have a treatment and theorizing a new drug for them. They will be presenting their work at a poster fair on Friday April 18 from 9:30-10:50am in the SLC Small Events Space. Visitors to the poster fair will have the opportunity to act as investors and "fund" the projects they like best. Come check out all their hard work!

Program Exit (PSLO) Surveys have been sent to students who are expected to graduate from those departments/programs that participate in this college-wide assessment activity*. These surveys ask students how well they think their programs prepared them to succeed in each of the expected student learning outcomes. These surveys are the main indirect assessment activity that most programs use and they are very important to our academic assessment plan.
Surveys opened on April 15 and will run through mid-May to give graduating students ample time to complete the survey. Students received an email to their Alfred State email address from Bridget Jacobs, Alfred State College-Surveys at Surveys@alfredstate.edu, and many of them will also see a pop-up box in myLearning encouraging them to "Please Complete Your Course Evaluations and Surveys". Students graduating from multiple programs, or those in programs administering more than one version of the exit survey received multiple surveys based on their program(s).
To maintain high response rates, please encourage students to access and complete the survey. Students should look for an email from Bridget Jacobs, Alfred State College - Surveys. Most of the surveys can be accessed from MyLearning as well. It only takes a minute to complete and will help us assess and improve student learning! Responses are anonymous and student names will not appear anywhere on the survey.
If you have any questions or your students have any difficulty accessing the survey, contact Bridget Jacobs, Director of Assessment, Accreditation and Program Planning at jacobsbm@alfredstate.edu. Thank you very much for your participation and for helping ensure that Alfred State graduates "hit the ground running!"
*IACBE-accredited programs in the Business Department do not participate in this survey.

Join the Exploring AI Collaborative!
Alfred State's Faculty Senate Special Committee on AI as well as SUNY FACT2 guidelines on AI, recommend that individual faculty members retain the right to monitor and regulate AI use in their courses—and enforce standards outlined in their syllabi. But most faculty members lack access to resources that might enhance their AI literacies and equip them with the knowledge required to make informed decisions about AI policies and AI-infused curricula.
We therefore invite you to join the "Exploring AI Collaborative", led by Russell V. Rittenhouse and mentored by Dr. Deepa Deshpande. This faculty learning community is designed to help you collaborate with your peers, to:

Faculty from a variety of disciplines are often looking for ways to emphasize the value of written communication skills for their students. These skills are introduced in COMP 1503: Writing Studies, but further coordination is needed to ensure writing skills are reinforced (in assessable ways) in upper-level major courses. The Faculty Learning Community on Interdisciplinary Writing Transfer aims to facilitate the coordination of writing instruction across disciplines. Contact Travis Matteson, mattestw@alfredstate.edu, to join.

Alfred State has enhanced its non-partisan political engagement resources and partnered with ALL IN to implement a voter registration and resource portal for our students! A new Register to Vote link can be found on the Student Portal Page under student resources. From that link you can either continue to voter registration resources that are relevant for you and the state you wish to be registered in or you can use a pull down menu in the top corner of the landing page that says Get Vote Ready to access additional resources such as:
If you are registering to vote in NYS the last day to have your registration logged with the Board of Elections is October 26th, but each state had different deadlines and we recommend that eligible students get registered ASAP so that you have time to verify your voter status, check your polling location, and make a plan to vote (i.e. mail in ballot, early voting location, scheduling a time to get to your polling location on election day). Should you have questions about the voting process or navigating the above resources, we have staff that are able to assist on both the Alfred and Wellsville campus, their contact details and additional resources can be found on our Political Engagement page.

Did you know that Licensed Veterinary Technicians are a key part of the health and well being of your pets when they are in a Veterinary Hospital, and even when your pet is home with you, but you have questions about their care? They do everything from blood draws to lab work, monitoring anesthesia to assisting in surgical procedures, dispensing medications and ensuring you understand why that medication was prescribed and how to properly administer it when you take your pet home. They are counselors, educators, scrub nurses, physical rehabilitation specialists, surgical assistants, radiologists, ultrasound technicians, post op recovery nurses, nurse anesthetists, pharmacy techs, behavior specialists, schedulers, and so much more. They are highly trained, and can do the job of 20 different people on the human side in one day.
This week is National Veterinary Technician Week! Let's celebrate these amazing individuals by being a little kinder to people, and thanking that special LVT in your animal's life.

If you are interested in joining a FACT2 Task Group please email the co-chairs directly.
FACT2 Experiential Learning Task Group Signup –
While approaches to experiential learning vary, SUNY has focused on curricular experiences that are structured, intentional and authentic (Applied Learning Initiative), and integrated within credit-based courses or programs of study. Experiences should have hands-on and/or real-world context and should be designed in concert with those who will be affected by or use them, or in response to a real situation. Additional expectations include intentional curricular design featuring the following minimal requirements, with opportunity for further customization and signature offerings.
While the possibilities are limitless, the importance of the work calls for a focused and practical planning process, one that results in tangible outcomes that are inherently useful for SUNY campuses and programs, while also ambitious and generative, culminating in an actionable and sustainable plan for activating the benefits of experiential learning for all SUNY students while catalyzing broader impacts related to innovation, and economic and sustainable development.
Co-chairs: Mara Huber (mbhuber@buffalo.edu) Ed Beck (ed.beck@oneonta.edu)
FACT2 Generative AI in Action Task Group Signup –

The group will comprise three subcommittees, described below, each tasked with specific goals that will result in the creation of resources and information designed to meet the pressing needs of the SUNY faculty and students.

Recruiting 50 SUNY instructors from across the STEM disciplines to participate in a collaborative online faculty development program this fall.
The i-STEAM Project: A gamified faculty development learnshop for enhancing inclusive teaching in STEM, has been selected for the Innovative Instruction Technology Grant for the second time in 2024-25 and funded by the Office of the SUNY Provost and the Innovative Instruction Research Council (IIRC). Co-PIs are from SUNY Stony Brook, Suffolk Community College, and Buffalo State; our respective campuses CELT are supporting the project. Participants who complete the program will be paid a $300 stipend. You can find more information about the program here. And here is a brief informational video.
The online program is five weeks long. There will be 80-minutes weekly online synchronous meetings in October - November (time to be determined by participant availability). Each week's content will include readings, videos, discussions, and activities that might take 3-5 hours per week, though participants can go as deep as their time and interest permit with the materials. We do require regular attendance in the workshops, and we do understand if you let us know about an unusual circumstance.
The deadline to complete the application form is no later than 11:59 p.m. EST, Friday, Sept. 13, 2024. Selection decisions will be made by the end of September.
