Banner Web for Faculty version 9 Migration
C.J. RahrJun. 10, 2025
Technology Services has begun disabling links in Banner Web version 8 as it will be de-supported by Ellucian on October 1, 2025.
The functionality that has been disabled in version 8 is available through the landing page of version 9. Navigation to the version 9 landing page can be found in my.alfredstate.edu on the faculty and staff home page. Below are the Banner 8 links that have been disabled so far and the Banner 9 equivalents.
- Faculty Detail Schedule is available in BannerWeb 9 by clicking the "Your Detail Schedule" link.
- Faculty Schedule by Day and Time can be found by clicking the link for "Your Week at a Glance"
- Detail and Summary Class Lists are combined in the "Class List" link on the version 9 landing page
- Selecting Course Title or CRN will bring up details about the section. Clicking anywhere else on a row will bring up the class list.
- There is a toggle in the top right of the class list to show a detailed student view or the summary view.
- Emailing a class can be done by selecting the checkbox next to student or checkbox all (top of column) and then clicking the envelope icon. This will open your default mail program and enter the addresses into the BCC line.
- "No Access" will display in the grade columns until grading is turned on.
- Details about a student will appear if you click on the student name, taking you to a new tab/window for the full student profile. Clicking anywhere else on the row will bring up a mini contact card.
- Picture Roster - Student pictures are available in the class list
- Class Email Address List - Classes can be emailed directly from the class list
- Interim and Final Grades have been consolidated into the "Faculty Grade Entry" card. Tabs on the application will direct you to interm or final grades.
- Grade Roster Page - To view grades by a CRN, users will need to use Banner Admin Pages (GUI Banner) form SFASLST. If you do not have access to this form you may request it through the Records office.
- Registration Overrides has the same functionality as Banner 8 and found by clicking the "Registration Overrides" link on the Banner 9 landing page
BannerWeb version 8 for students will remain intact until the start of the fall semester.
If you have questions, please contact the Help Desk for assistance. We will provide additional updates as we continue to migrate to version 9.

Reminder! Program Exit (PSLO) Surveys Sent to Students Expected to Graduate
Bridget JacobsMay. 15, 2025
Last Reminder! Program Exit (PSLO) Surveys have been sent to students who are expected to graduate from those departments/programs that participate in this college-wide assessment activity*. These surveys ask students how well they think their programs prepared them to succeed in each of the expected student learning outcomes. These surveys are the main indirect assessment activity that most programs use and they are very important to our academic assessment plan.
Surveys opened on April 15 and will run through mid-May to give graduating students ample time to complete the survey. Students received an email to their Alfred State email address from Bridget Jacobs, Alfred State College-Surveys at Surveys@alfredstate.edu, and many of them will also see a pop-up box in myLearning encouraging them to "Please Complete Your Course Evaluations and Surveys". Students graduating from multiple programs, or those in programs administering more than one version of the exit survey received multiple surveys based on their program(s).
To maintain high response rates, please encourage students to access and complete the survey. Students should look for an email from Bridget Jacobs, Alfred State College - Surveys. Most of the surveys can be accessed from MyLearning as well. It only takes a minute to complete and will help us assess and improve student learning! Responses are anonymous and student names will not appear anywhere on the survey.
If you have any questions or your students have any difficulty accessing the survey, contact Bridget Jacobs, Director of Assessment, Accreditation and Program Planning at jacobsbm@alfredstate.edu. Thank you very much for your participation and for helping ensure that Alfred State graduates "hit the ground running!"
*IACBE-accredited programs in the Business Department do not participate in this survey.
Program Exit (PSLO) Surveys and Spring PDW Assessment Reporting
Bridget JacobsMay. 13, 2025
Program Exit (PSLO) Survey results were uploaded to Watermark Planning & Self-Study yesterday (Monday, May 12). The Program Exit Surveys ask students to rate how well the program prepared them to achieve each program student learning outcome. For those who are completing academic assessment plans in Watermark Planning & Self-Study this can find them in the first PSLO in each 2024-25 Academic Assessment Plan, in the Program Exit Survey measure. The reports are in PDF format. Each PSLO being assessed should have a Program Exit Survey measure, and the PDF results can be used to complete these measures in the rest of the program's annual academic assessment plan.
If you don't find survey results uploaded to your program in Watermark Planning & Self-Study by Tuesday, May 13, this means there were no surveys completed or there were no graduating students from the program. The surveys will remain open until Friday, May 16, so if there are graduating students from your program, please reach out to them to ask them to complete the survey. All students received emailed survey links and reminders to complete the survey addressed from Bridget Jacobs, Alfred State College Surveys.
Questions about Program Exit Surveys or about assessment? Contact Bridget Jacobs at jacobsbm@alfredstate.edu. I also look forward to seeing many of you during the Assessment PDW sessions today on the Alfred and Wellsville campuses (see the PDW schedule for times, locations and details).

Reminder--Please Tell Us About Civic Engagement Student Activities! Civic Engagement and Sustainability Survey
Bridget JacobsMay. 2, 2025
Faculty, have your students engaged in activities that benefited community members or organizations as part of a class this year? If so, we would encourage you to complete the Civic and Sustainability Survey we emailed you for any relevant class you teach.
Civic engagement through class activities is a primary avenue in which students engage and benefit the larger community here at Alfred State and can be defined in numerous ways. Civic and sustainability learning involves experiences where there is an intentional tie to a wider community benefit. For example, class members might present ideas to a group to improve their town or business. Students might be providing care through fundraising, or perhaps they are involved in fixing or building something designed to benefit others. Alternatively, research may be conducted designed for public benefit, or students are providing service through internships, clinicals, etc.
In short, how we define civic and sustainability efforts in the classroom is broad and this survey is meant to capture the big and little efforts connected to your classroom experience. That said, if you feel your course consistently weaves in Civic Engagement, we invite you not only to complete this survey but also encourage you to apply for it to hold a Civic Engagement Intensive Course (CEI) designation.
The data collected will:
• Help us understand the scope and impact of Alfred State’s involvement in our communities.;
• Highlight and celebrate faculty members utilizing this high impact practice;
• Support an upcoming application to the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification;
• Identify on-campus “experts” related to a community cause or organization.
To complete the survey, click on the link in the email you received about the survey.
Staff members who want to tell us about co-curricular civic engagement and sustainability activities can do so here: Alfred State Portal Civic Engagement Sustainability Form
If you have any questions, please reach out to Cyan Corwine in the Center for Civic Leadership at corwincy@alfredstate.edu. We look forward to learning about and celebrating the creative and substantial ways you all work with students as well as the community.
Thanks, Bridget Jacobs (on behalf of Cyan Corwine and the Center for Civic Leadership)

Mech. Eng. Tech. Smart Home Projects on Display in SET
Matthew LawrenceMay. 1, 2025
Please stop in for a self-guided tour of completed student projects in room 252 SET! Students in MECH 4134 - Introduction to Renewable Energy have been working hard to complete simulated smart homes this semester, and we welcome you to check them out. We have 16 examples - each is a poster board full of sensors and actuators demonstrating how a central microcontroller can be used to control things we use every day in different areas of a home. A single controller allows us to conserve energy through system optimization. Nerd stuff, but we are proud of it. The project and the components were purchased with a donation from the Linde Corporation and an applied learning grant from the VPAA's office. You can also check out the original assignment, the project grading rubric, and a lab partner contribution rubric used for project assessment. The rooms will be open today (30Apr) through Friday (02May) from 8am - 3pm. Thank you!

Exploring AI Collaborative
Russell RittenhouseApr. 8, 2025
Join the Exploring AI Collaborative!
Alfred State's Faculty Senate Special Committee on AI as well as SUNY FACT2 guidelines on AI, recommend that individual faculty members retain the right to monitor and regulate AI use in their courses—and enforce standards outlined in their syllabi. But most faculty members lack access to resources that might enhance their AI literacies and equip them with the knowledge required to make informed decisions about AI policies and AI-infused curricula.
We therefore invite you to join the "Exploring AI Collaborative", led by Russell V. Rittenhouse and mentored by Dr. Deepa Deshpande. This faculty learning community is designed to help you collaborate with your peers, to:
- Understand what AI is and how it works
- Learn how to effectively and ethically integrate AI into your teaching
- Decide how best to enforce your course standards around AI use
- Collaborate on a shared repository of AI resources across disciplines
- Contribute to a faculty-generated "Quick Start Guide" to AI for classroom use
Format & Schedule:
- Hybrid format (in-person and virtual via Teams)
- Four live meetings to be held between April and October (dates/times to be determined by participants)
- Ongoing summer conversation on Teams to exchange ideas and resources
- Results will be shared during an information session in the Fall 2025 Professional Development Week
We are accepting the first 15 faculty participants—don’t miss your chance to be part of this important conversation!
Sign up here: [Exploring AI Collaborative Sign-Up]
We look forward to learning and building together!

Benefits of online systems including instant feedback for numeric answers, question randomization and scaffolded approaches for multi-step problems will be presented. Disadvantages such as students not performing proper documentation, the inability to check the solution process, and the lack of individualized feedback will be discussed.
