April is Global Volunteer Month, and our incredible student body is springing into action!
Cyan CorwineApr. 14, 2026
We encourage our campus community to support the many initiatives our incredible students are spearheading throughout April as part of our Civic Leadership Spring into Action Campaign. Initiatives are already underway and you can find a list of some of the offerings linked here.
In addition to the linked list we are aware of other potential volunteer needs in the community that are not yet filled, so if you are a club, organization or department interested in providing service this month please reach out to Cyan Corwine in the Center for Civic Leadership so we can help connect you with community partners in need. Also, if you have a service project or fundraiser that you are leading that is not on the press release, please send Cyan the details (Name/date/purpose of event, club/org sponsoring it, primary contact details) and we can add it to the online link!
In addition to the publicized event, Criminal Justice Club (SLC 411) are partnering once again with UP and Civic Leadership to bring back the Food-for-Fine-Forgiveness program throughout the month of April. Students can drop off $10 of non-perishable food in exchange for one parking fine reduction to either of these leadership suites during the month of April. Only one fine reduction per person. Food benefits wider campus community.
These are just some of the amazing ways our students are leading the way with service this Global Volunteer Month. Please get out and support them in their efforts as we Spring into Action and nurture our caring community! Again, if you have another event that you would like to lead during the month or if you want help partnering with someone in wider community to fulfill service, please do not hesitate to reach out to Cyan Corwine (corwincy@alfredstate.edu)

What's Going Around- Health & Wellness Services
Clarissa RichmondJan. 27, 2026
Health and Wellness Services is here to help students should they be feeling ill. There are multiple viral illnesses going around campus, mainly respiratory and gastrointestinal. Below is a quick reminder on how students can access care from our team of registered nurses and nurse practitioner.
- Alfred Campus: Call us at 607-587-4200. We will schedule an available time for the student to be evaluated and treated by our medical staff. Setting up an appointment is the best way for students to be seen promptly upon arrival at our location in TA Parish. Appointments can be scheduled throughout the day except between 12:00-1:00. We are open 8:30-4:30 Monday through Friday when classes are in session.
- Wellsville Campus: Call us at 607-587-3141 or visit the health center on the first floor of the Pioneer Student Union for a walk-in appointment. If the health center is temporarily closed, there will be a note with directions on how to contact help. We are open 7:30-3:30 Monday through Friday when classes are in session.
As always, call 911 if students develop symptoms requiring emergency assistance which might include difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, or persistent pain/pressure in the chest. An on-campus after-hours contact is University Police at 607-587-3999. Otherwise, area weekend and after hour options for healthcare include the following options:
Urgent Care:
- St. James Urgent Care in Hornell (open 10:00AM-8:00PM daily)
- Jones Memorial Urgent Care in Wellsville (open 11:00AM-7:00PM daily)
Emergency Room:
- Jones Memorial Hospital (Wellsville)
- St. James Hospital (Hornell)
Medical excuses or "notes" excusing students from class are unable to be provided. However, confirmation dates and times a student received treatment can be accessed through the student health portal, to be provided to their faculty. All appointments are encouraged to be scheduled around their class schedule. If a student is encouraged to stay out of class due to illness, the appropriate faculty will be notified.

Celebrate Martin Luther King's Legacy Through Service - January 19th
Cyan CorwineJan. 19, 2026
Celebrate service and MLK Day with us!!
On January 19th we will celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dynamic life and unwavering commitment to nurturing and serving community in pursuit of equality and justice. This year will mark the 40th anniversary of the holiday's official observance in 1986. It later became the only federal holiday designated by Congress as a National Day of Service in 1994 when Unites States Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act.
The Center for Civic Leadership invites our campus community to drop by the Student Leadership Center parkspace from 10-2 on Monday, January 19th to help us celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by helping us create care kits for community members in need. We will have supplies to assemble two types of kits:
- Book-Blanket-Buddy kits for children who are either entering the foster care system or find themselves navigating displacement alongside their families for various reasons.
- Personal Hygiene kits for adults and children experiencing hardship, displacement, or homelessness.
All of the Care Kits created will be shared with our partners at ACCORD to help disseminate to wider community responders to ensure timely delivery to people in need. The Center for Civic Leadership has acquired items for the kits (special thanks to student engagement for donating all the stuffed animals needed for our Book-Blanket-Buddy kits!) and will have support staff from the Center for Civic Leadership and the Cultural Life Center ready to welcome any helping hands that want to assemble a few kits for these causes.
Regardless of your ability to lend a hand to this initiative, we encourage everyone to find meaningful ways to give back and strengthen community (special thanks and shout out to our Women's Lacross coach and team for answering another community call and volunteering with the Community Action Angels on the day!)
As we reflect on Dr. King's legacy and the many challenges facing our communities, we look forward to joining the unified service efforts across our nation this MLK Day, renewing our commitment to fostering caring communities through this symbolic launch into another semester filled with service.

Happy New Year from the Center for Civic Leadership!

Thanksgiving Food Pantry Hours and Holiday Initiatives
Cyan CorwineDec. 3, 2025
As we conclude a semester filled with community care, the Center for Civic Leadership's wants to thank everyone who has supported initiatives so far!
Our Community Needs Hub (ground floor of Braddon Hall) is open through the week and will remain in operation over finals week and the winter break with reduced hours (we will list those once defined)
- Food Pantry Requests can be completed at any time and staff will fill them and contact requesters once filled.
While many of our semester initiatives for service have concluded we still have a few more ways to give through the end of the semester!
- Food Drive throughout November and early December! To help meet the needs of students and our wider community our November Food Drive Campaign will continue into early December. Thanks to collaborative efforts with the Veteran's United Club and National Association for Social Workers in Western NY we have already been able to deliver 6 full tote bags of goods to the Almond Pantry. For those interested in giving, we are seeking non-perishable food and hygiene items that we will use in both our on-campus student Food Pantry and to share with Alfred Area Food Pantry for this second collection period!
- Donations can be dropped off in following locations:
- Community Needs Hub (ground floor of Braddon Hall),
- Donation bin on the 3rd floor of SLC between the double doors that face the spine of campus
- Global Engagement and Civic Wellbeing Office (SLC 416)
- Donations can be dropped off in following locations:
- Food for Fine Forgiveness Partnership runs for remainder of semester!
- A collaborative program between the Criminal Justice Club, University Police, and Civic Leadership. Students with a parking fine can donate $10 worth of non-perishable food (make sure it isn't expired or close to expiration date!) to the Criminal Justice Suite (SLC 411) or the Community Needs Hub (ground floor of Braddon) to "pay" for one parking fine (limit to one fine relief per student per semester). This initiative will run through to the end of the Fall semester.
- Community Action Angels Toy and Spare Change Drive:
- The Center for Civic Leadership and University Police are once again collecting new toys for ACCORD Community Action Angels for children 0-13 and spare change, to help fund gift cards for kids 13-18. Toys can be dropped off in Cyan's office SLC 416 or with Brook Scianna in the Student Engagement Office, if your area would like to have a collection spot, please let me know and we can coordinate picking items up before delivering to Community Action Angels in early December.
- Ardent Solutions Holiday Card Initiative:
- We encourage, clubs, organizations, classes, or departments to get creative and create general season greeting cards to help bring some holiday cheer to folks in elder care/nursing home facilities.
- The Center for Civic Leadership will collect cards until the 11th of December and deliver them to Ardent Solutions for their initiative on December 12th.
Again, grateful to all those who donated goods or extended helping hands this semester!
- Questions on any of the items above can be sent to civicengagement@alfredstate.edu.
