It’s important to periodically review your retirement plan beneficiary designation. Life circumstances change, and the beneficiary you previously named may not be the one you would choose today. Keeping your beneficiary information up to date ensures your benefits are distributed according to your wishes. Additionally, please verify that your beneficiary’s contact information is current to prevent any delays in benefit processing.
How to Review and Update Your Beneficiary Information:
Taking a few minutes to review your beneficiary information can provide peace of mind and help ensure your benefits are handled according to your wishes.
If you have any questions or need assistance, please reach out to your retirement plan provider directly.

For campus employees feeling anxiety about the stock market and your retirement savings, now would be an excellent time to pick up the phone to speak with one of our approved SUNY-focused Financial Counselors and Advisers.
Many Americans are anxious right now due to the rollout of new U.S. tariffs this past week. With heightened market volatility, investors are worried about their retirement accounts (i.e., SUNY ORP and/or 403b/457b) and some are trying to time the market or pulling their investments. While SUNY HR Benefit’s office are not able to offer investment guidance, we want to encourage thoughtful movement of funds, not rash decision making in volatile times.
Remember, everyone who is a SUNY employee can call one of our advisers from TIAA, Voya, Fidelity, or Corebridge. They can offer a variety of services that include general counseling conversations to deep dive reviews of specific accounts.
The SUNY ORP and Voluntary 403(b) Savings Plan currently offers employees a choice of four different Investment Providers-Corebridge, TIAA, Voya & Fidelity. These various providers have different representatives throughout the SUNY campuses and are listed per the following SUNY System Administration HR Benefits link:
https://www.suny.edu/benefits/vsp/403bproviders/
The NYSDCP-457b is an additional voluntary saving plan that NYS/SUNY offers to NYS employees:

Reminder on Holiday Gift Exchange Rules
When state employees exchange gifts, the key factor in determining if a gift is allowed is whether it could appear as an attempt to influence the recipient of the gift in the performance of their state job or is intended as a reward for the employee’s official action. Gift giving among employees during the holidays is generally permissible as long as participation is optional (with that option communicated clearly) and there is no intent to influence decision-making. Supervisors should be especially careful not to create an expectation that gifts are expected or required.
Rules on Gifts from External Parties
State officers and employees are prohibited from soliciting or accepting gifts of more than “nominal value” from individuals and entities that lobby or do business with the state, known as “interested sources". The Commission will generally consider something that has a fair market value of $15 or more to be a gift. A gift includes but is not limited to money, services, loans, travel, lodging, meals, refreshments, entertainment, or a promise having a monetary value. State employees who violate the gift ban are subject to a fine of up to $40,000 and the value of the gift.
Can I accept the following gifts or party invitations?
Additional Information
The rules above apply in most situations. There may be some special circumstances though, that warrant different results. If you think special circumstances may apply to you, please email Maria Bordeaux at bordeaml@alfredstate.edu or you may:

Alfred State College is committed to community safety and the uninterrupted continuation of essential operations during severe weather conditions, emergencies, and unforeseen circumstances. Additionally, the college has an obligation to inform employees of essential status. To best meet the needs of each department, supervisors will determine the appropriate action required of employees in the varying scenarios that may arise.
Notification to Employees: In the coming days, supervisors will receive written notices for all employees in their department. This notice outlines employees essential status and the expectations that come with it.
Supervisor-Employee Conversation: Supervisors will discuss with employees their essential employee designation and the responsibility it entails as well as potential scenarios and procedures expected when classes are canceled and/or offices are closed. Both the supervisor and employee must sign the form to acknowledge that they have reviewed the essential employee designation and discussed the associated procedures. Employees should retain a copy of the signed form for their records.
Return the Form to HR: Please return the signed document to Human Resources by November 20, 2024.

We are excited about the launch of the Campus Climate Survey, facilitated by Viewfinder. However, we have been made aware that some employees may have missed the survey as it is labeled as “external” and may end up in the “Other” inbox if both “Focused” and “Other” inboxes are activated in Outlook. The survey link is unique to each person but is anonymous.
This survey is a valuable opportunity for you to share your thoughts and experiences on campus. We encourage you to participate and ensure completion before the survey closes on November 15th!

Did you know that Licensed Veterinary Technicians are a key part of the health and well being of your pets when they are in a Veterinary Hospital, and even when your pet is home with you, but you have questions about their care? They do everything from blood draws to lab work, monitoring anesthesia to assisting in surgical procedures, dispensing medications and ensuring you understand why that medication was prescribed and how to properly administer it when you take your pet home. They are counselors, educators, scrub nurses, physical rehabilitation specialists, surgical assistants, radiologists, ultrasound technicians, post op recovery nurses, nurse anesthetists, pharmacy techs, behavior specialists, schedulers, and so much more. They are highly trained, and can do the job of 20 different people on the human side in one day.
This week is National Veterinary Technician Week! Let's celebrate these amazing individuals by being a little kinder to people, and thanking that special LVT in your animal's life.

SUNY has mandated that all employees complete Title VI training by September 30. The SUNY developed asynchronous training was provided to campuses and is now available in BizLibrary. This training is essential to ensure all members of the Alfred State community know how to prevent and report instances of discrimination, including but not limited to those that fall under Title VI. Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 extends protections to students and employees from discrimination based on race, color, or national origin, including shared ancestry or ethnic characteristics.
The deadline for completing this training is the end of the day on September 30th, and it is crucial that all employees complete it on time.
Even if you attended the training during Professional Development Week, SUNY is requiring all employees complete this training and the quiz to show comprehension.
To access this training in BizLibrary, please follow the instructions below:
Given the limited time available, please prioritize this training. Your prompt attention to this requirement is appreciated as we work to ensure compliance across the campus.
It is expected that this Title VI training will be added into the annual mandatory training requirements in future years. The remaining mandatory trainings will launch later this semester.
Thank you for your cooperation in this important matter.

Effective September 1, 2024, eligible full-time term faculty received the 3% Across the Board salary increase. The September 25 paycheck covers the pay period from August 29 to September 11 and is the first to include this 3% increase.
Since the 2023-2024 payroll year was a leap year and 2024-2025 is not, the pay on this check is split: 17 hours were calculated using the leap year factor and 63 hours using the non-leap year factor. However, pay stubs only show the 63 hours with the non-leap year rate, which may cause confusion.
In summary:
We hope this provides clarity for those reviewing their paystubs. If you have any questions, please contact hr@alfredstate.edu.

The Office of Mental Health offers all employees an opportunity to practice various coping skills and strengthen their resilience through OMH Wellness Groups, which aligns with OMH’s vision of supporting a healthy workplace environment. The groups include deep breathing and simulation exercises to allow employees to practice rather than have group discussions. Group sessions offer a warm, inviting space that fosters relaxation virtually and provides examples of calming techniques and basic coping skills. Remember that the mind and body are one, and psychological health is just as important as physical health to your overall well-being.
The group sessions are free, confidential, anonymous, and virtual employees can call in from any phone. Group sessions include Monday Meditation, Mindful Mondays, Taking Care of Mind & Body, and Tending to Self.
Of important note - there is an additional Breath-Body-Mind (BBM) class happening every Wednesday at 8 p.m in Spanish.
Please see the calendars for group session details and how to join. We have included both a digital version and a printable version for your convenience.

Sometimes, a colleague's hard work or helpfulness makes all the difference—for you, your team, or the broader college community. Recognizing these contributions is a meaningful way to show appreciation and acknowledge the positive impact they have on others.
We're excited to announce the revamped "Cheer for a Peer" Employee Recognition Program! This program is your opportunity to shine a spotlight on the peers who consistently go above and beyond. Whether they're assisting others, delivering exceptional work, improving processes, enhancing customer service, or playing a vital role in student recruitment and retention, your nomination can help them receive the recognition they deserve.
As a bonus, employees nominated for their efforts in recruitment and retention will also be considered for Dr. Mauro’s “Spotlight” and a special t-shirt giveaway!
To make it easier and more environmentally friendly, we've improved the nomination process with an electronic submission form. Plus, the traditional paper certificate for a coffee or soda has been replaced with a $3 credit to the nominee's dining dollars account, redeemable at any ACES dining location.
Don't miss the chance to recognize a colleague whose work has made a difference! Submit your nomination today at www.alfredstate.edu/cheer.
For questions or more information, reach out to Melissa Biddle, Talent Acquisition and Engagement Specialist, at biddleml@alfredstate.edu or extension 4027.

The Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government requires that all state officers and employees receive ethics training within 90 days of hire and each year thereafter. The ethics law restricts certain business and professional activities, both while in state service and after separation to prevent corruption, favoritism, undue influence and abuses by current and former state employees. Information on New York State Ethics can be found at https://ethics.ny.gov/.
Ethics training aligns with the calendar year. If you completed Ethics training last fall, you are required to attend training again this year. However, if you participated in a session last spring, you are not required to retake the training in 2024.
Please note that overtime will not be approved for this training. Additionally, employees who do not attend the full duration of the training will need to retake the training when it is offfered at another time later this semester. The TEAMS link for this session is https://asc-cite.com/suny-ethicstraining

The B-140 SUNY Tuition Reimbursement-Assistance Program waives partial tuition expenses for career-related, credit bearing course work taken through SUNY. Please note if your bargaining unit provides a tuition waiver benefit, you must use that tuition benefit prior to your participation in this program. The B-140 may only be used for a second course during a semester/summer session. You must be actively on payroll for the duration of the course. The tuition amount waived depends on the remaining available funds for 2024-25 and the number of applications. To apply for fall, submit a completed Form B-140W, Application for Tuition and Fee Assistance, to Human Resources by July 15.
The following criteria, in priority order, is used in determining funding for applications:
Employees are eligible to apply after six months of employment. Assuming funds are available, tuition for an Alfred State course is funded up to 100%. Tuition at other SUNY campuses is funded up to 50%. Employees pay all fees other than tuition. Final awarding of funds is contingent upon the successful completion of the course.
Part-time employees, working at least half time will be entitled to the same benefits as above. Part-time employees, working less than half time, will be entitled to one-half of the level of full-time benefits. For a B-140 application form, please contact Marci in Human Resources, or download the B-140 form from our HR Forms page.

If you are an employee and you are injured at work it’s really important that you follow our accident reporting procedures. These procedures help ensure accurate tracking and a smooth process for both you and the College.
When accidents happen:
Even if you think an injury is minor, you should complete the accident report and notification procedures. This protects you and the College and ensures the groundwork is in place to handle any potential medical or time off work needs. If you have any questions, please call Marci Johnson in HR at 4034 or email to johnsoma6@alfredstate.edu.

Due to the high number of B-140 tuition requests approved for fall 2023 and spring 2024, the allocated funds have been depleted. Therefore we are not promoting applications for summer sessions. The B-140 program will resume with the fall 2024 semester. If you have any questions, please call Marilyn at 4027. Thank you.
