F. Burke Voit, 90, Wellsville, NY, died Saturday, May 9, 2026 in Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

Burke was an English Professor at Alfred State for almost thirty years.

Dear faculty,

This fall, PDW introduces Faculty Action Institutes — extended 3-hour collaborative working sessions where faculty tackle focused challenges and produce concrete deliverables like action plans, guidelines, and frameworks. 

• Six institutes are proposed across two days, running concurrently for 3 hours in the morning.
• Each Institute will focus on a specific topic/skill/institutional challenge and will include - a virtual speaker/expert to offer insights for 45 minutes and working sessions for brainstorming, discussions and panel discussions.
• Participation in one Institute will count as attendance at 3 PDW sessions towards 15 sessions required to qualify for the Certificate of Professional development.
• Action plans and insights will be shared by participants of each Institute during an open forum, after lunch.

Please give us your input by Wednesday, May 13: Which topics interest you most? Would you be willing to facilitate or co-facilitate a session? Have a different topic you'd like to propose? Complete this 5-minute survey. PDW Fall 2026 Faculty Action Institutes & other sessions    – Fill out form

The survey also includes call for proposals by members of Faculty Senate committees interested in facilitating a roundtable or an open forum at the PDW, and by faculty members interested in showcasing their innovations in 25–50-minute sessions.

For more information about PDW Institutes and an overview of PDW Fall 2026, plan to attend the CITE Open Forum on Thursday, May 14 from 9-10 am in EJB 119 and continue the conversations during CITE End-Semester Social from 10 -11:30 am in EJB 106.

• 8:00–8:45 Data-informed Decisions: Using College Dashboards to support planning Facilitator: Jennifer Dunne Explore the college’s dashboards and how to use key institutional data to inform decisions, support planning, spot trends, and advance departmental goals. Location: Teams
• 9:00–10:00 Department Chair Planning Meeting: Chairs meet with their department to plan departmental assessment activities for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
• 10:30–11:30 End-of-Year Departmental Assessment and Assessment “To-Dos” Facilitator: Bridget Jacobs Department chairs briefed by Bridget ahead of their Departmental Planning Meeting at 9 am. Location: Teams

Please keep these important deadlines in mind: final grades are due by 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 13, and D/F reports in Starfish are due by Friday, May 15.

CITE will host an Open Forum and Q&A and End-of-Semester Social on Thursday, May 14, in EJB 119/106. This will be a chance to reflect on the year together, get a brief overview of faculty engagement with CITE and COL during 2025–26, preview upcoming Fall PDW Institutes, explore sign-ups, and connect with colleagues over light snacks. We encourage our campus community to support the many initiatives our incredible students are spearheading throughout April as part of our Civic Leadership Spring into Action Campaign.  Initiatives are already underway and you can find a list of some of the offerings linked here.  Big thank you to all who have conducted service or supported through engagement so far!!

We are aware of other potential volunteer needs in the community that are not yet filled, so if you are a club, organization or department interested in providing service this month please reach out to Cyan Corwine in the Center for Civic Leadership so we can help connect you with community partners in need.  

In addition to the publicized events: 

• AGC Student Chapter will be doing a village clean-up on April 21st led by their advisor Dr. Reza Yadollahi from 11am-1pm.
• Pi Rho Zeta is hosting a drunk driving awareness event this Wednesday, April 22nd (Earth Day) at 5pm in EJ Brown 119.
• Alpha Beta Chi is hosting a carwash on April 24th from 3-7pm at the Alfred Station Fire Hall. Car's are $5 and Trucks are $7 with all proceeds raised going to Alfred Fire & EMS!
• Criminal Justice Club (SLC 411) are partnering once again with UP and Civic Leadership to bring back the Food-for-Fine-Forgiveness program throughout the month of April. Students can drop off $10 of non-perishable food in exchange for one parking fine reduction to either of these leadership suites during the month of April. Only one fine reduction per person. Food benefits wider campus community.

These are just some of the amazing ways our students are leading the way with service this Global Volunteer Month. Please get out and support them in their efforts as we Spring into Action and nurture our caring community! Join us for the second SAT CITE Social + Roundtable, a relaxed and collegial gathering where faculty come together to exchange practical teaching ideas, discuss common classroom and lab challenges, and learn from one another’s experiences. 

Schedule:

• Wednesday, April 1, 2026, 2:30 to 4 pm
• Workforce Development Center, Room 154
• This session is designed to spark conversation through a few short teaching-and-learning activities, followed by brainstorming around strategies that may help address shared concerns and teaching challenges of Automotive and Electrical Trades Departments.

Join us this Thursday, March 26, at 11:30 am, for the second roundtable conversation featuring two use cases each, of Mentor AI and Visible AI assignments. While both platforms provide guided access to tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude to support student AI Literacy and Academic Integrity, they function somewhat differently:

• Visible AI (VAI) is intentionally designed with academic integrity at its core.
• Mentor AI offers a broader student-facing ecosystem and learning support environment.

Together, they raise important questions we’ll explore:

• How can both platforms support academic integrity while enabling responsible student use of AI?
• How do we design assignments that build AI literacy, not dependency?
• What does effective, transparent AI integration look like in practice?

Russ Nunley will be leaving Alfred State to pursue a new opportunity with the Marketing Communications Office at RIT, beginning next week. Russ has been a valued member of the Alfred State community since 2016 and has contributed to many important marketing and communications initiatives across campus.

During the search for a new Chief Marketing Officer, please direct marketing-related inquiries to the Marketing Communications team or Kishan Zuber, who will assist with coordination in the interim.

Please join us in wishing Russ well. A coffee hour to thank Russ and celebrate his contributions will be held Friday, March 20, from 9 - 11 AM in the SLC Small Event Space.

Last week we recognized our maintenance professionals on National Maintenance Worker Day. We had the opportunity to recognize and thank our people whose skill, commitment, and pride in their work help make Alfred State the vibrant community it is. Through their daily efforts, maintaining our buildings, caring for our grounds, and responding whenever help is needed, they create the safe, welcoming environment that allows our students, faculty, and staff to thrive.

Linda K. Panter, 75, died Thursday morning (February 19, 2026) at her home, following a long illness.

Panter graduated from Alfred State and served as a clinical instructor and professor at the college. She retired with the title Professor Emeritus.
