We encourage our campus community to support the many initiatives our incredible students are spearheading throughout April as part of our Civic Leadership Spring into Action Campaign.  Initiatives are already underway and you can find a list of some of the offerings linked here. 

In addition to the linked list we are aware of other potential volunteer needs in the community that are not yet filled, so if you are a club, organization or department interested in providing service this month please reach out to Cyan Corwine in the Center for Civic Leadership so we can help connect you with community partners in need.  Also, if you have a service project or fundraiser that you are leading that is not on the press release, please send Cyan the details (Name/date/purpose of event, club/org sponsoring it, primary contact details) and we can add it to the online link!

In addition to the publicized event, Criminal Justice Club (SLC 411) are partnering once again with UP and Civic Leadership to bring back the Food-for-Fine-Forgiveness program throughout the month of April. Students can drop off $10 of non-perishable food in exchange for one parking fine reduction to either of these leadership suites during the month of April. Only one fine reduction per person. Food benefits wider campus community.

These are just some of the amazing ways our students are leading the way with service this Global Volunteer Month. Please get out and support them in their efforts as we Spring into Action and nurture our caring community! Join us for the second SAT CITE Social + Roundtable, a relaxed and collegial gathering where faculty come together to exchange practical teaching ideas, discuss common classroom and lab challenges, and learn from one another’s experiences. 

Schedule:

• Wednesday, April 1, 2026, 2:30 to 4 pm
• Workforce Development Center, Room 154
• This session is designed to spark conversation through a few short teaching-and-learning activities, followed by brainstorming around strategies that may help address shared concerns and teaching challenges of Automotive and Electrical Trades Departments.
• Refreshments will be available.

Join us this Thursday, March 26, at 11:30 am, for the second roundtable conversation featuring two use cases each, of Mentor AI and Visible AI assignments. While both platforms provide guided access to tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude to support student AI Literacy and Academic Integrity, they function somewhat differently:

• Visible AI (VAI) is intentionally designed with academic integrity at its core.
• Mentor AI offers a broader student-facing ecosystem and learning support environment.

Together, they raise important questions we’ll explore:

• How can both platforms support academic integrity while enabling responsible student use of AI?
• How do we design assignments that build AI literacy, not dependency?
• What does effective, transparent AI integration look like in practice?

Russ Nunley will be leaving Alfred State to pursue a new opportunity with the Marketing Communications Office at RIT, beginning next week. Russ has been a valued member of the Alfred State community since 2016 and has contributed to many important marketing and communications initiatives across campus.

During the search for a new Chief Marketing Officer, please direct marketing-related inquiries to the Marketing Communications team or Kishan Zuber, who will assist with coordination in the interim.

Please join us in wishing Russ well. A coffee hour to thank Russ and celebrate his contributions will be held Friday, March 20, from 9 - 11 AM in the SLC Small Event Space.

Linda K. Panter, 75, died Thursday morning (February 19, 2026) at her home, following a long illness.

Panter graduated from Alfred State and served as a clinical instructor and professor at the college. She retired with the title Professor Emeritus.

Our staff is easy to work with and has the experience and skill to handle an impressive range of design, print, and web projects.

The new, digital Store Front provides and easy way for you to order Marketing Services and automates as much of the request process as possible, allowing us to provide cost effective results for the College. Our team will carefully review your request and work with you to achieve the results you are looking for.

Stewart A. Sharrett, 75, passed away Thursday (Dec. 18, 2025) at St. James Hospital in Hornell. 

After serving his country, he pursued his lifelong passion for carpentry, holding various positions before building a rewarding career as a carpenter at Alfred State College, from which he retired after years of dedication, hard work, and service.

Alfred State College announces Research with Real Results

My moves this week took me all the way to Albany, where I spent the weekend with our Empire Service Corps students, Mamadou Barry, Edlande Edouard, Gus Miller, who were attending a conference on service and engagement as part of the cohort that was selected across SUNY. It was so great to see them engage their peers and make connections that will serve them well moving into the future. In fact, our own Gus Miller, first-year Auto student, was chosen as one of five students to speak directly with Chancellor King as part of a roundtable to kickoff the meeting during dinner. Needless to say, he represented Alfred State amazingly and we are very proud of him and to all our Empire Service Corps members who assist with mental health, food insecurities, and a number of other important student needs across campus.

My attendance in Albany, necessitated that I miss the Midnight Pancake Breakfast and the end of the year performances by the Dance Team and the Performing Arts Winter Concert, along with some final capstone project presentations in academic departments. If only I could figure out how to be in two places at once! My gratitude to all the volunteers at the Midnight Breakfast and to the whole ACES team, along with Sarabeth Matteson and Lynn Hayes who advise the groups I mentioned for what I heard were phenomenal performances.

This will be the last Mauro on the Move this semester, and I want to take the opportunity to thank you all so very much for a great semester. I hope to see you all at our Employee Holiday Cocktail Party on Dec. 15 at 3 p.m.

Virginia Putnam passed away peacefully on Nov. 12 surrounded by her loving family. Putnam taught at Greenwood, Hornell, and at Alfred State.

We invite the college community to celebrate Billy Greene's Birthday and hear about the initiative "Let's Save Some Lives" on Monday, Nov. 10. Dilan Gilluly is in the Cheer for a Peer Spotlight this month. 

Dilan is always doing his best to help us in the Building Trades Department. He puts the extra effort into explaining what is going on. Often, he follows up by giving us additional information on how to get the help we need when things go wrong. He always is providing excellent customer service.
