Internal Control Reminder - Importance of Internal Controls

Internal controls are processes built into our activities to ensure we accomplish our desired results efficiently and effectively. We use controls every day in much of what we do:

  • Locking our homes/cars/offices
  • Observing our car’s fuel gauge to determine if we need more gas
  • Maintaining attendance sheets or time cards

Internal controls help us do the right things in the right way, which ensures that we comply with laws and regulations, as well as protect college assets. Remaining mindful and supportive of internal controls will decrease errors while reducing our exposure to fraud, audits, and litigation, which can have restrictive and detrimental effects on the college. It is the responsibility of everyone within the college to maintain strong internal controls.

Ombuds Services at Alfred State College

Ombuds Services at Alfred State College

Our campus community provides faculty and staff the services of a campus ombuds to employees who may be having trouble in workplace relations and are seeking an independent, neutral, confidential, and informal avenue to address their issue or concern. If you have questions or would like to meet with the campus ombuds, David Ray, you can connect by selecting the campus ombuds tab in the Alfred State portal, or by calling 607-587-4287.

A campus ombuds provides independent, informal and non-partisan counsel to faculty and staff within the Alfred State campus community.  Alfred State faculty and staff can seek the campus ombud’s assistance in dispute resolution or misunderstandings. The campus ombuds provides an opportunity for visitors to discuss matters of concern and may act as a listener, mediator, and factfinder. The campus ombuds answers questions and provides feedback regarding concerns or complaints.  The ombuds may also provide referrals to campus resources. Faculty and staff are not required to meet with the campus ombuds to access those resources. When appropriate, the campus ombuds can also speak generally with campus offices about concerns or assist with changes implemented to create a more supportive environment for faculty and staff.

Skills USA Traffic-University Police

On Tuesday, March 4, 2025, Alfred State will be hosting the 36th Annual Skills USA Region I Leadership Conference and Skills Olympics. Alfred State will welcome over 850 visitors. Alfred State faculty, staff, and students should be aware of the following and how it may impact you individually.

·         Buses will be entering campus and unloading passengers in the faculty parking lot of Orvis Activities Center beginning around 7:20 a.m. You will notice an increased amount of traffic in the morning so if possible avoid this area.

·         Buses will be parked on West Gate Road for the entire day.

·         We will begin moving buses to the staging area around 2:15 p.m. This area includes lot #18, #19, and #20. These lots are also known as “Siberia” parking lots up by the track.

·         If you are parked in any of these lots, you will not be able to exit until all the buses have loaded and departed.

Group sizes can range from 1 - 12 people.

Groups can be COED (male/female/non-binary persons) living together. Those that wish to live in a COED area will need to agree to live in a COED area later in the form.

Areas that are single rooms: MacKenzie Commons Apartments and Townhouses. All other areas are double occupancy rooms.

If your group does not fill the space in which they are placed, another group may be added to fill the remaining space. The combined groups will be based on the group criteria (i.e. single gender or COED).

The Office of College Housing cannot guarantee that all groups will be placed, it all depends on the applicant pool and available space.

Groups that are placed through our group process do not need to sign up for rooms during individual sign-ups.

Those that leave the group placements are not guaranteed to be placed back into the previous placement.

Groups are scored and placed based on a matrix of the following information:

  • Years in residence
  • GPA
  • Accrued credit hours
  • Judicial history (negative score)
